STUDENT INTERN – FINANCE (COMMODITY RISK) | Basin Electric Power Cooperative

The Tone: This is an internship at Basin Electric Power Cooperative, located at its Headquarters building in Bismarck, ND. Basin Electric Power Cooperative, an organization supporting 1,061 employees, provides temporary, project-based assistance across its various departments and subsidiaries. This specific role is designed to offer real-world experience to students pursuing degrees aligned with business, accounting, or finance, particularly focusing on commodity risk management. The incumbent will gain direct exposure to Cooperative operations and practices, actively supporting finance teams with hands‑on tasks and assignments appropriate to their field of study.

What You’ll Actually Do

• Cash Management: Review daily cash margin and prepayment requests, seeking appropriate internal approvals, confirming details with the counterparty, or communicating any disputes before processing for payment.
• Trade Verification: Monitor for newly entered commodity trades within the trade capture system, meticulously reviewing them for accuracy and completeness, and then processing them for approval or following up with traders for necessary corrections.
• Reporting & Analysis: Assemble and distribute various essential credit reports and other pertinent risk reports to relevant stakeholders as needed.
• Credit Documentation: Assist with the thorough assembly of information required for and the comprehensive documentation of counterparty credit analysis processes.
• Process Enhancement: Collaborate directly with the manager and staff members of the Commodity Risk area to identify opportunities and implement enhancements for commodity profit and loss monitoring and reporting functionalities.

The Must-Haves

• Background: Entry‑Level. Must be enrolled as a full‑time student in a four‑year accounting, business, or finance‑related field with at least two years completed, or be a recent graduate (within the past 12 months) of such a program. A minimum GPA of 2.5 is required.
• Experience: Must be at least 18 years of age. A transcript from your academic institution is required at the time of application for review.
• Skills: Effective written and verbal communication, proficiency with Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel, research and analytical thinking, organization and attention to detail, team collaboration, initiative and adaptability, confidentiality and professionalism, and compliance with safety procedures.
• Bonus: Previous internship or relevant work experience, additional certifications or coursework in the field of study.
