Job summary

Itron, Inc. is seeking a motivated 2027 Summer Data Science Intern to support data and ML initiatives for utilities and energy.

Located in Liberty Lake, WA, this 40-hour/week, 10-week internship runs May/June through August/September 2027, with a hybrid emphasis and collaboration across data scientists, software engineers, and product teams. The role emphasizes pipeline development, cloud infrastructure experiences, and hands-on data analysis with opportunities to contribute to real-world grid

Qualifications

• Enrolled in an accredited bachelor’s degree program related to data science, statistics, CS, or software engineering.
• Completion of at least two years of college coursework by internship start date.
• Experience using AI agent-driven tools to support software development or testing.
• Proficiency in Python and SQL.
• Knowledge of statistics, data analysis techniques, and data-driven problem solving.
• Exposure to machine learning through coursework, projects, or internships.
• Strong written and verbal communication with collaborative mindset.
• Interest in Utilities & Energy technologies.

Responsibilities

• Support development, maintenance, and enhancement of data and ML pipelines in production environments.
• Assist with cloud infrastructure implementation and maintenance with quality focus.
• Clean, prepare, and validate large datasets for analysis and model development.
• Collaborate with senior team members to conduct exploratory data analysis and present insights.
• Contribute to research, testing, and improvement of ML models under guidance.
• Work with data scientists, software engineers, product managers and stakeholders to deliver innovative solutions.
• Demonstrate agile mindset and adapt to shifting priorities.
• Uphold inclusive collaboration practices across diverse perspectives.
• Support projects improving operational efficiency and customer outcomes for utilities.
