Job description

Camp ClapHans and J.D. McCarty are looking for a Camp Nurse to join our team for the summer. This position is responsible for providing treatment to patients with a variety of medical conditions. They will work with the camp physician to promote good health and care. This position will administer medication, monitor and record patient progress, and educate families and the patient as needed.

The ideal candidate will be compassionate, proficient, and love interacting with young people. This position is vital in assisting to create and manage nursing care plans. They will participate in the evaluation of current and future medical needs of the patient. This will be a great experience for any Nurse to gain working knowledge in the field of Intellectual Developmental Disabilities. Join us for the summer and your bonus is one great adventure!

Pay Rate: $26.00 per hour

Responsibilities:
  1. Provide exceptional patient care - Maintain nursing standards while supporting patients with all applicable medical needs. Create and provide patient care plans as needed or requested. Communicate with the patient, their family, and members of the medical team to achieve the desired goals of the patient-care plan.
  2. Ensure nurse stations are kept clean and stocked with needed supplies and medications.
  3. Collect all medications of campers at camp check-in, making sure there is enough medication for the length of stay for each camper. Make sure medication is not expired and in the original container with clear instructions from a physician.
  4. Make sure all medications are locked in the nurse's station at all times.
  5. Observe campers and staff for illness, sickness, or other communicable diseases.
  6. Administer camper prescription medications as directed. Dispense over-the-counter medications as appropriate.
  7. Keeps a daily medical log and documents on all campers.
  8. Assess campers and staff who are ill or injured and determine if further medical attention is needed.
  9. Demonstrates safety awareness during entire shift including proper lifting techniques, awareness of surroundings, and using appropriate training techniques such as CPR. Follows agency and department policy guidelines when lifting by using proper body mechanics while performing duties. Complies with department guidelines for lifting up to 30 pounds and obtains assistance for weights over 30 pounds. Follows infection control policies and procedures, reporting infectious illness, utilizing isolation procedures, and practicing universal precautions. Implements evacuation procedures upon notification of security staff, including gathering patient charts, medication, and directing staff and patients.
  10. Observes all areas of camp to ensure health and safety for campers and staff.
  11. During camper check-out, return all medication to parents/guardians in their original container.
  12. Attend all off-campus field trips to provide nursing care as needed.
Requirements:
  • Degree in Nursing, with current RN or LPN license for the State of Oklahoma.
  • A minimum of six months of recent medical experience.
  • Must be able to stand or sit for long periods.
  • Must be able to push, pull, reach, and bend frequently.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • CPR Certification.
  • Background check completion and passing drug test.

Coverage needed for the following Summer Camp 2025 sessions:

  • June 22nd - June 25th
  • June 29th - July 2nd
  • July 13th - July 16th

Camp ClapHans is a residential summer camp for kids with disabilities aged 8 to 18 and is an outreach program of the McCarty Center. The camp features two cabins and an activity building located next to an 11-acre lake, offering activities like archery, arts and crafts, canoeing, fishing, horseback riding, talent shows, and swimming.

Our summer staff includes Camp Counselors, Camp Leaders, therapists, and Camp Nurses. Each camper is assigned to a counselor with a 1:1 ratio. Prior training will be provided. We value staff with interests in healthcare, education, outdoor recreation, nutrition, and related fields.
