Summer Camp Counselors perform a variety of duties for the Town's recreation and leisure services, including organizing, supervising, and participating in Summer Camp and other special community events. Counselors assist in overseeing the recreational facilities and their readiness for use. Counselors exercise some independent judgment in carrying out the day-to-day responsibilities within established departmental and Town policies and procedures.
Summer Camp Program:
Summer Camp at Belleair Rec runs for 10 consecutive weeks.
As a Summer Camp Counselor, you can expect to:
- Create and participate in a variety of activities, including group sports, games, and arts/crafts.
- Supervise and monitor campers on weekly field trips.
- Provide a safe and welcoming environment for all campers.
Essential Functions
- Assist in leading summer camp activities that are planned and developed by the Recreation Department staff.
- Guide, teach and lead summer camp participants through planned engaging activities.
- Supervise campers at all times, verify group attendance during field trips and at all times.
- Communicate and follow requests and supervision of the Recreation Manager and Recreation Supervisor.
- Assist in cleaning up from campers, room tidiness and organize equipment after use.
- Be a positive role model to campers at all times, maintain exemplary manners and behavior; create enjoyable experiences.
- Enforce rules and regulations of the Recreation Department to maintain an effective working relationship with management, coworkers, participants, and patrons.
- Make sure all safety rules are followed and address issues appropriately.
- Report all accidents, injuries and illnesses as required by departmental and Town policies and procedures.
- Ensure all participants who are injured receive immediate and appropriate treatment.
- Resolve minor disagreements among participants with firmness and tact.
- Respond to inquiries and greet the public in a courteous manner.
- Perform administrative duties of registering participants, collecting fees and membership dues, keeping accurate program and participant records.
- Perform all duties in conformance with established and appropriate safety and security standards.
- Demonstrate thorough knowledge of and adheres to all established department and Town policies and procedures.
- Perform other job-related duties as necessary and consistent with the position.
Education and Qualifications
- A minimum of one (1) year of experience in organized recreation, youth sports leagues, summer camp preferred.
- An equivalent of education, training and experience may be substituted.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Some knowledge of public recreation principles, practices and programs.
- Ability to effectively lead and instruct school-age children in recreation and leisure services programs.
- Ability to resolve minor disagreements among program participants with firmness and tact.
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, and the public.
- Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
Physical Requirements
- Must frequently lift and/or move more than twenty (30) pounds and occasionally assist in lifting and/or moving more than fifty (50) pounds.
- Required to move; stand, climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; and sit.
- Acceptable vision abilities required with or without correction.
- Ability to hear normal conversational speech and the ability to distinguish between different sounds in a noisy environment.

- Frequently works outside in the heat during summer months during recreational programs, camps, events and activities.
- Noise level varies from moderately loud to loud indoor and outside settings and moderately quiet in office settings.
Special Requirements
- Must pass a Level II background screening and drug screening.
- Must have a current CPR / AED certification or the ability to obtain the certification.
- Valid State issued Identification Card or Driver License.
Position is seasonal for the duration of Summer Camp.
