Job description

Job Title: Summer 2027- Process Engineer Intern

Summary: As a Process Engineer Intern, you will work alongside experienced engineers and manufacturing professionals to improve the performance, reliability, and efficiency of our chemical production processes. You'll take ownership of meaningful projects from concept through execution, gaining hands‑on experience in a real manufacturing environment while delivering measurable business results. Throughout the internship, you'll analyze production data, identify improvement opportunities, and help implement solutions that enhance Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE), reduce operating costs, improve product quality, and support strategic capital projects. You'll collaborate with Operations, Maintenance, Reliability, Quality, and EHS teams to solve complex challenges, drive continuous improvement initiatives, and make a visible impact on plant performance. This is an opportunity to move beyond classroom theory and apply engineering principles to real‑world manufacturing processes while developing project management, problem‑solving, and technical leadership skills.

Responsibilities Include:
Improve Manufacturing Performance (OEE)

Analyze production and equipment performance data to identify the primary drivers of downtime, reduced throughput, and other losses impacting Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE). Conduct root cause investigations using engineering problem‑solving methodologies and collaborate with Operations, Maintenance, and Reliability teams to develop and implement corrective actions. Track project results and quantify improvements in equipment reliability, productivity, and operational efficiency.

Drive Cost Reduction and Process Optimization

Identify opportunities to reduce manufacturing costs through process improvements, waste reduction initiatives, and optimization of raw material and utility consumption. Evaluate process performance through data analysis, plant observations, and collaboration with cross‑functional teams. Develop business cases and financial benefit analyses to support project recommendations and measure realized savings.

Enhance Product Quality and Customer Satisfaction

Support quality improvement initiatives aimed at reducing the Cost of Poor Quality (COPQ) and improving overall product consistency. Investigate process‑related quality issues, identify root causes, and recommend sustainable corrective and preventive actions. Partner with Production, Quality, and Technical teams to implement improvements that enhance product quality and reduce customer complaints.

Lead Engineering Projects from Concept to Completion

Charter, scope, and execute projects aligned with site operational and strategic objectives. Develop project plans, track milestones, communicate progress, and present recommendations to engineering and site leadership teams. Deliver measurable results while gaining hands‑on experience in a large‑scale manufacturing environment.

Utilize Data to Drive Continuous Improvement

Collect, organize, and analyze production, quality, and cost data to identify trends and improvement opportunities. Apply engineering and statistical problem‑solving techniques to support operational decision‑making. Create reports, presentations, and visualizations that communicate findings and project outcomes to stakeholders.

Collaborate Across Functional Teams

Work closely with Operations, Maintenance, Reliability, Quality, EHS, and Engineering personnel to solve complex manufacturing challenges. Participate in plant meetings, field observations, and cross‑functional improvement efforts to gain a broad understanding of manufacturing operations.

Qualifications:
  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Petrochemical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Demonstrated ability to work safely and effectively in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with the ability to evaluate technical data and identify process improvement opportunities.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, balance project deadlines, and work independently in a fast‑paced setting.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, with strong skills in Excel for data analysis, reporting, and project tracking.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present findings and recommendations to technical and non‑technical audiences.
  • Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work across Operations, Maintenance, Quality, Reliability, and Engineering teams.
The following are preferred qualifications:
  • Coursework or project experience in manufacturing processes, process engineering, statistics, process control, or continuous improvement.
  • Experience analyzing data and using engineering principles to solve technical problems.
  • Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Experience with data visualization, reporting tools, or engineering software is a plus.
Program Minimum Qualifications:
  • The candidate must be actively enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at the time of application and for at least one semester following the conclusion of the internship.
  • The candidate is expected to be available 40 hours a week for a period of 10-12 weeks between the months of May and August.
What We Offer:
