Summer 2027 Maintenance Engineer Intern

Summary

As a Maintenance Engineer Intern, you will play an active role in improving the reliability, efficiency, and effectiveness of maintenance operations within a large-scale chemical manufacturing facility. Working alongside maintenance leaders, planners, supervisors, engineers, and skilled craftspeople, you'll evaluate work processes, analyze maintenance data, and implement solutions that enhance productivity, standardization, and operational performance. Throughout the internship, you'll gain hands-on experience with maintenance planning and execution, preventive maintenance programs, SAP systems, digitalization initiatives, and continuous improvement efforts. You'll lead and support projects that create measurable business value while developing a deeper understanding of how maintenance reliability directly impacts safety, production performance, and asset availability. This role provides an opportunity to move beyond classroom theory and gain practical engineering experience in a manufacturing environment where your work will have visible and lasting impact.

Responsibilities
  • Lead Maintenance Process Improvement Initiatives Evaluate existing maintenance workflows and identify opportunities to improve efficiency, standardization, and overall maintenance effectiveness.
  • Develop and implement solutions that reduce non-value-added activities and improve work execution processes.
  • Support productivity initiatives that enhance maintenance performance and workforce efficiency.
  • Support Digital Transformation and Maintenance Innovation Assist with the digitalization of maintenance processes to improve documentation, traceability, accessibility, and audit readiness.
  • Evaluate opportunities to automate manual reporting, streamline information flow, and improve data visibility.
  • Support continuous improvement projects utilizing digital tools, data analytics, and system enhancements.
  • Enhance Preventive Maintenance Programs Review preventive maintenance strategies and equipment maintenance plans within SAP.
  • Analyze maintenance history and equipment performance data to identify opportunities to improve reliability and reduce failures.
  • Support optimization of preventive maintenance activities to improve asset performance and operational uptime.
  • Support ERP and SAP System Improvements Participate in ERP system transition activities, including data validation, cleanup, testing, process mapping, and documentation.
  • Assist in developing standard work, job aids, and training materials that support successful system implementation.
  • Help improve SAP data quality and reporting capabilities to support informed maintenance decision‑making.
  • Analyze Maintenance Performance and Reliability Data Collect, organize, and analyze maintenance metrics and key performance indicators.
  • Identify trends, process gaps, and opportunities for continuous improvement.
  • Develop reports, dashboards, and visualizations that support data-driven maintenance planning and execution.
  • Gain Exposure to Maintenance Operations Work closely with maintenance supervisors, planners, craftspeople, operations personnel, engineers, and EHS professionals.
  • Participate in maintenance planning, scheduling, preventive maintenance activities, work execution reviews, and safety processes.
  • Develop an understanding of equipment reliability, asset management, outage planning, and maintenance best practices within a manufacturing environment.
  • Develop and Maintain Process Documentation Create and update procedures, standard work instructions, job aids, and process documentation.
  • Support continuous improvement efforts by documenting new processes and ensuring consistency across maintenance activities.
  • Assist in preparing documentation required for audits, compliance reviews, and operational excellence initiatives.
  • Present Project Results and Business Impact Document project findings, recommendations, and implementation results.
  • Communicate progress and outcomes to maintenance leadership and project stakeholders.
  • Present final project results and measurable business impact to site leadership at the conclusion of the internship.
Qualifications
  • The following are required for the role Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or another engineering discipline applicable to an industrial manufacturing environment.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with an interest in maintenance, reliability, manufacturing operations, or continuous improvement.
  • Ability to analyze data, evaluate work processes, and develop practical solutions to operational challenges.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with employees across multiple levels and functions.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high‑quality work.
  • Demonstrated initiative, curiosity, and willingness to learn.
  • Commitment to working safely in both office and industrial field environments.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Coursework or project experience related to maintenance engineering, reliability, manufacturing systems, industrial operations, project management, or continuous improvement.
  • Experience working with data analysis, process mapping, workflow improvement, or productivity initiatives.
  • Familiarity with SAP, ERP systems, Power BI, Power Automate, or other digital business tools.
  • Exposure to Lean Manufacturing, Continuous Improvement, Reliability Engineering, or Operational Excellence concepts.
  • Previous internship, co‑op, manufacturing, or engineering project experience.
Program Minimum Qualifications
  • The candidate must be actively enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at the time of application and for at least one semester following the conclusion of the internship.
  • The candidate is expected to be available 40 hours a week for a period of 10-12 weeks between the months of May and August.
Base Salary

Base Pay Range: $22.00 - $26.00 The base salary offered is determined by factors including but not limited to education, experience, skill sets, and geography.
