Job summary

West Bend Mutual Insurance Company is offering a Summer 2027 Internship in the Special Investigations Unit in West Bend, WI. This in-office role gives students hands-on exposure to fraud investigation, data gathering, and policy reviews under SIU supervision.

You will learn state fraud statutes, privacy laws, and how to document evidence, while developing investigative skills and professional relationships within a top-rated insurer.

Qualifications

• Pursuing a degree in criminal justice or business preferred or equivalent experience.
• Basic data research and investigative skills are desirable.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills are important.
• Proficiency with computers and data entry tools is expected.

Responsibilities

• Support fraud detection and investigation by identifying red flags, gathering facts, and documenting evidence in compliance with company policy and legal requirements.
• Learn and follow procedures related to state fraud statutes, privacy laws, and FCRA/DPPA considerations under SIU supervision.
• Learn and apply SIU policies, referral guidelines, and escalation procedures in assigned work.
• Follow approved protocols for database access, information collection, and confidentiality.
• Properly use internal and external databases (e.g., claims history, ISO/Verisk, NICB, public records, social media, and proprietary tools).
• Assist with maintaining investigative documentation and supporting information requests as directed.
• Develop progressive skillset to translate analytical findings into actionable intelligence for SIU investigations.
• Assist law enforcement or regulatory referrals by validating data accuracy and completeness.
• Use authorized research methodologies and ensure proper interpretation of data results.
• Ensure consistency, objectivity, and completeness in case documentation.

Job Summary

Conduct investigative and intelligence research into suspected insurance fraud involving auto, property, casualty, workers' compensation, and other lines of business. Collaborate with the SIU investigative staff, internal stakeholders, and external partners to evaluate and investigate suspicious insurance transactions (claims, underwriting, policy, etc.), identify red flags, gather facts, collect evidence, support fraud detection programs, and communicate investigative research findings to SIU, Claims, and other internal stakeholders.

Work Location

This position is an in-office role located in West Bend, WI. No remote opportunities for this position are available at this time.
