Job Description
TITLE: SUBSTITUTE TEACHER – DAY-TO-DAY
TYPE: Non-Union, Cycle III
REPORTS TO: Building Principal/Substitute Personnel Liaison
OBJECTIVE: The primary function of a substitute teacher is to deliver the district curriculum using the lesson plans of the teacher to help all students reach their highest potential.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Assumes all duties and responsibilities of the absent teacher.
- Teaches all scheduled classes and prepares a written summary of work completed.
- Follows the teacher’s written lesson plans and consults with the principal and/or staff to resolve questions and/or concerns.
- Complies with all building procedures and schedules, including taking precautions to ensure staff and student safety.
- Communicates with the absent teacher.
- Upholds all School Committee policies.
- Develops and maintains a positive learning environment.
- Works cooperatively with staff and caregivers.
- Incorporates the effective use of available resources including technology.
- Respects personal privacy and maintains the confidentiality of privileged information.
- Accepts personal responsibility for decisions and conduct.
- Performs other specific job‑related duties as directed by the building principal.
Required Minimum Qualifications
- Associate’s, Bachelor’s or Master’s in a related field.
- MA Department of Elementary and Secondary Education certification preferred.
ADA and Minimum Qualifications to Perform Essential Job Functions
- Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate a variety of equipment including computers, copiers, etc., and able to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally. Must be able to stand, crouch, and bend over for a long period of time.
- Data Conception: Ability to compare and judge characteristics of data, people, or things.
- Interpersonal Communication: Ability to give instructions, assignments, or directions to subordinates or assistants.
- Language Ability: Ability to read various correspondences and prepare reports, forms, evaluations, etc. Must be able to speak before groups of people with poise, voice control, and confidence.
- Intelligence: Ability to apply logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
- Verbal Aptitude: Ability to record and deliver information, explain procedures, and understand technical or professional languages.
- Numerical Aptitude: Ability to utilize mathematical formulas, add, subtract, multiply, divide, utilize decimals and percentages, and apply basic mathematics.
- Form/Spatial Aptitude: Ability to inspect items for proper dimensions.
- Motor Coordination: Ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using office equipment and assisting students.
- Manual Dexterity: Ability to handle a variety of items such as office equipment and hand tools.
- Interpersonal: Ability to deal with people and adapt under stress and in emergency situations.
- Physical Communication: Ability to talk and hear, and communicate via telephone or radio.
Job Requirements
