Job summary

Calvin Christian School is seeking a Substitute Teacher to support learning when the regular teacher is unavailable. The role requires following prepared lesson plans and maintaining a safe, engaging classroom environment during on-call assignments.

We expect a Bachelor’s degree and prefer candidates with an Illinois Substitute Certificate and prior school experience. This is a part-time, hourly, non-exempt position with daily on-call duties.

TITLE: SUBSTITUTE TEACHER

CLASSIFICATION: PART-TIME, HOURLY, NON-EXEMPT

REPORTS TO: PRINCIPAL

DEPARTMENT: SUBSTITUTE

Overview of Position:

The Substitute teacher's role is to help students have continuous learning experiences when their regular classroom teacher is unavailable. Substitute teachers are on call and responsible for monitoring and maintaining a safe learning environment in place of the classroom teacher. Substitute teachers are responsible for following plans prepared by the classroom teacher.

• Follow lesson plans and instructions provided by the regular classroom teacher.
• Engage students in learning and encourage participation and curiosity.
• Maintain a safe, orderly, and respectful classroom environment.
• Supervise students and support their well-being throughout the school day.
• Manage classroom activities and address student needs appropriately.
• Demonstrate patience, kindness, responsibility, and professionalism in interactions with students and staff.
• Model positive behavior and encourage students to make thoughtful, respectful choices.
• Communicate relevant classroom updates or concerns to the appropriate school personnel.

Education

• Bachelor's degree required.

Experience

• Illinois Substitute Certificate (preferred).
• Experience working in a school and with children.

• Must profess a personal and mature commitment to faith in Jesus Christ and actively support and affirm Calvin Christian School's Statement of Faith, Foundational Beliefs, and mission statement.
• Must demonstrate a clear Christian testimony and a mature Christian character reflected in a life of faith, prayer, and biblical principles.

Supervisory Responsibility

None.

Required Hours

Monday through Friday, 7:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., as needed for substitute assignments.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to sit, stand, and walk throughout the school day.
• Ability to speak clear ly and understand verbal communication.
• Ability to read, see, and hear to perform classroom duties and supervise students.
• Ability to use hands and fingers to handle materials, type, and reach as needed.
• Ability to work effectively in a busy classroom environment.
• Ability to occasionally lift or move items weighing up to 25 pounds.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in a typical classroom environment. Must be able to work in an open room setting with moderate noise levels.
