Springfield Public Schools is seeking a Substitute School Nurse RN for the 2026-2027 year in Springfield, MA. The role follows the RN substitute salary schedule with a pay rate of $45 per hour and scheduling arranged with the Principal and Nursing Supervisor.

The RN will assess student health, maintain records, coordinate community health resources, administer medications with consent, and provide emergency care on site.

Qualifications

• Must have a current valid license to practice nursing in Massachusetts.
• Three years of responsible professional experience in school nursing or a related field preferred.
• Current certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
• Valid nursing license in the state of Massachusetts.

Responsibilities

• Assess and evaluate students’ health, pertinent family history and home factors; counsel students, parents, and school personnel about health problems and issues.
• Maintain health records, conduct research, and evaluate school health programs.
• Notify appropriate individuals of immediate and potential health‑related problems.
• Coordinate health resources of school, home, community and allied health agencies/hospitals by making necessary arrangements, maintaining records, notifying and counseling students, parents/guardians and health personnel.
• Prepare regular written reports for supervisor, MDPH and other relevant agencies.
• Develop an individual health care plan as needed and coordinate with other providers and school personnel.
• Document pertinent information in student records according to the Standards of Practice.
• Provide emergency care for all students on school premises in the event of injury or sudden illness.
• Administer medication to students with parent/guardian and physician consent.
• Perform site‑mandated screenings in vision, hearing, scoliosis, TB testing and other health‑related activities as deemed appropriate by state and city departments of public health.
• Provide information about health and disease prevention in cooperation with health education programs as requested by administrators.
• Participate in school health‑related activities as deemed appropriate for a school nurse by principal/supervisor.
• Act as a resource in health education to students and families.
• Initiate, promote, maintain and implement programs for the recognition, prevention and control of disease, including giving immunizations.
• Collaborate with staff in school and health centers.
• Sport physical clearance coverage as needed.
