Job summary

Springfield Public Schools is seeking a School Nurse to support student health services. The RN must hold a current license in Massachusetts, have CPR certification, and ideally three years of school nursing experience.

The role involves health assessments, emergency care, medication administration with parent/guardian consent, maintaining records, and coordinating with families and community health resources. The nurse will contribute to immunization efforts and health education within schools.

Qualifications

• Must hold a current valid license to practice as a Nurse in Massachusetts.
• Three years of responsible professional experience in school nursing or a related field is preferred.
• Current CPR certification is required.

Responsibilities

• Assess and evaluate students' health and home factors; counsel students, parents, and staff on health issues.
• Maintain health records and participate in school health program evaluation.
• Provide emergency care and administer medications with proper consent.
• Coordinate health resources with families, schools, and health agencies.
• Prepare regular written reports for supervisor and relevant agencies.
• Develop and implement individual health care plans as needed.
• Document information in student records and follow Standards of Practice.
• Collaborate with staff and health centers to support student well-being.
• Support immunization programs and health education activities.
• Provide sports physical clearance when needed.

DEPARTMENT: Nursing

REPORTS TO: Principal/Nursing Supervisor

SALARY: RN Substitute salary schedule

WORK SCHEDULE: To be arranged with the Principal and the Nursing Supervisor of Nursing (In accordance with contract requirements).

Duties

• Assess and evaluate students' health, pertinent family history and home factors; counsel students, parents, and school personnel about health problems and issues.
• Maintain health records, conduct research, and evaluate school health programs.
• Notify appropriate individuals of immediate and potential health-related problems.
• Coordinate health resources of school, home, community, and allied health agencies/hospitals by making necessary arrangements, maintaining records, notifying, and counseling students, parents/guardians, and health personnel.
• Prepare regular written reports for supervisor, MDPH, and other relevant agencies.
• Develop an individual health care plan as needed and coordinate with other providers and school personnel.
• Document pertinent information in student records according to the Standards of Practice.
• Provide emergency care for all students on school premises in the event of injury or sudden illness.
• Administer medication to students with parent/guardian and physician consent.
• Perform site‑mandated screenings in vision, hearing, scoliosis, TB testing, and other health-related activities as deemed appropriate by state and city departments of public health.
• Provide information about health and disease prevention in cooperation with health education programs as requested by administrators.
• Participate in school health-related activities as deemed appropriate for the school nurse by principal/supervisor.
• Act as a resource in health education to students and families.
• Initiate, promote, maintain, and implement programs for the recognition, prevention, and control of disease, including giving immunizations.
• Collaborate with staff in school and health centers.
• Provide sport physical clearance coverage as needed.

Qualifications

• Must have a current valid license to practice as a Nurse in Massachusetts.
• Have at least three years of responsible professional experience in school nursing or a related field (preferred).
• Current certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
