Job summary

Grand Ledge Public Schools is seeking a substitute School Nurse to support student health services in the district, following established policies and practices.

This role involves working under the District Nurse Supervisor, supervising healthcare technicians, reviewing IHPs/ECPs, and providing training and health screenings for students.

Qualifications

  • Current State of Michigan RN licensure required
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
  • Current certification in BLS/CPR/AED

Position(s): School Nurse - Substitute
Beginning Date: 2026-2027 School Year
General Definition of Work:

The primary emphasis is assisting and maintaining an optimal level of “health” through established district/medical policies and practices for all students. This position is used on a sub basis when either of our current school nurses are out of the office.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Current State of Michigan Registered Nurse (RN) licensure required
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
  • Current certification in BLS/CPR/AED
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Plans and uses professional judgment and acts effectively to carry out the functions of this position within the nursing scope of practice
  • Working under the direction of the District Nurse Supervisor for school health services
  • Provide supervision, periodic evaluation and training of delegated tasks to assigned healthcare technicians or unlicensed assistive personnel including but not limited to medication administration, diabetes care, asthma, allergy, seizures, etc
  • Assess student’s health care needs and follow student specific individualized health plans (IHPs) and emergency care plans (ECPs)
  • Conduct student specific trainings for teachers, healthcare technicians and/or unlicensed assistive personnel
  • Perform mental health & physical health screenings
  • Respond to building emergent mental health and medical situations as available
  • Support the building medical emergency response team (MERT) with medical and cardiac emergency responses and drills
  • Assist in the prevention and control of communicable disease including assessment/triaging of staff and student reported illness.
  • Exercises other duties as assigned
Other possible responsibilities:
  • Communicate with staff/parents/guardians and children regarding health issues
  • While maintaining student confidentiality, act as a resource for teaching staff in appropriate medical processes and/or procedures
  • Act as a health care resource person to students and staff
Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to work positively, independently and collaboratively with students, employees, parents, medical personnel and the general public
  • Knowledge of state and local school health laws and policies
  • Ability to adapt the nursing process to fit the health needs of each school community
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information (medical and personal information)
  • Remain flexible in order to adapt to changes in the work environment
  • Demonstrated skill in effective problem-solving, decision making and verbal and written communication required
  • Basic computer skills, including e-mail, word processing and spreadsheets
  • Ability to assess situations and act quickly
  • Ability to multitask
Experience:
  • Minimum of three (3) years of practical experience working as a registered nurse required
  • Experience working with the pediatric population (preschool through adolescent children), staff, parent/guardians and physicians
  • Minimum of two (2) years of Public Health/Community Health experience preferred
  • Experience working as a School Nurse preferred
