Job summary

Lansing School District in Michigan is actively seeking a School Nurse to support PreK-12 students across 25 buildings. The role requires an active Michigan RN license, a Bachelor's degree, and eligibility for school nurse certification, with at least two years' nursing experience in school or pediatric settings.

The nurse will develop emergency and medical care plans, coordinate care with families and health providers, and train staff on medical conditions and emergency procedures.

Qualifications

• Must have a valid Michigan license to practice as a Registered Nurse.
• Bachelor’s degree required.
• Must have a current interim, standard, or professional school nurse certificate issued by the State Board of Education or be immediately eligible for one of the three categories of certification.
• Minimum of 2 years of professional nursing experience in school nursing or pediatric nursing.

Responsibilities

• Develop emergency care plans for students with chronic illness.
• Develop medical care plans for students with chronic illnesses (asthma, allergies, seizures, etc.).
• Serve as liaison between home, school, and health care providers.
• Assist students and families with access to environmental resources to improve attendance and well-being.
• Connect with students with high absenteeism to remove barriers to attendance.
• Provide coordination of communicable diseases in school, including health department reporting, case management, and prevention.
• Provide classroom instruction re: health and wellness, prevention and health promotion strategies.
• Monitor administration of daily and emergency medication at school.
• Monitor and ensure compliance with district medication policies.
• Oversee the distribution, maintenance, and staff training for emergency medications such as Narcan, Epi-pen.
• Provide staff training for a wide variety of medical conditions and needs.
• Provide training for Medical Emergency Response Teams in each school.
• Ensure compliance with state-mandated immunization requirements including monitoring, referrals, follow-up, and hosting immunization clinics.
• Follow up with families whose children fail the state-mandated vision and hearing screenings at school.
• Follow up with families whose children fail the dental screenings.
• Oversight of the AED program, including monitoring of AED's and staff training regarding use and function.
• Provide hands-on skilled Nursing assessment and care for routine illness, accident, and injury at school.
• Assist families with obtaining primary care for their children in the community.
• Direct oversight for medical assistants assigned to their schools.
• Participate in IEP's and student planning at assigned schools.
• Participate in the development of plans and other student plans to improve access to the curriculum.
• Make district-wide referrals for various needs and services (FORT, behavioral support, counseling, etc.).
• Oversee the distribution of Weekend Survival kits at assigned schools.
• Provide routine care, service, and support in school nurse-managed health clinics in school.
• Other duties as assigned

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

• Must be able to move throughout the building and campus, including classrooms, hallways, and outdoor spaces.
• Frequent verbal communication is required to instruct students, lead meetings, and collaborate with staff and families.
• May be required to stand or walk for extended periods, including during supervisory duties.
• Occasional bending, reaching, or sitting on the floor to interact with students.
• Regular use of computers and instructional technology for planning, instruction, and communication.
• Must be able to lift or carry instructional materials and supplies weighing up to 25 pounds.

$50,285 - $95,000 a year

Salary: Per appropriate placement on the LSEA master agreement salary schedule
