Registered Nurse – Special Education

Reports to: Site Administrator

Union: OEA

Purpose Statement

The Special Education Registered Nurse supports students with disabilities and chronic health conditions to ensure access to a free and appropriate public education (FAPE). The nurse provides direct health services, develops individualized healthcare plans, and collaborates with school teams to meet medical and educational needs under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Section 504, and state law.

Essential Functions

  • Provide direct and emergency nursing services to students, including those with significant medical needs.
  • Administer prescribed medications and treatments following medical orders and district policy.
  • Develop and implement Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHPs) and Emergency Care Plans (ECPs) for students with special needs.
  • Support medically fragile students, including management of tracheostomies, seizure disorders, gastrostomy feedings, and catheterizations.
  • Participate in special education assessments and contribute to the Individualized Education Program (IEP) team process.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential student health records consistent with FERPA, HIPAA, and district policy.
  • Prepare required health‑related documentation for IEPs, Medicaid billing, and state reporting.
  • Ensure compliance with Washington State Department of Health regulations for immunizations and communicable disease control.
  • Collaborate with school psychologists, counselors, occupational therapists, and other ESA professionals as part of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Serve as liaison among schools, families, and healthcare providers to ensure continuity of care.
  • Participate in the development of IEP goals related to health and access to instruction.
  • Train school staff in emergency medical procedures, medication administration, and chronic disease management (e.g., diabetes, asthma, seizure care, anaphylaxis response).
  • Provide health education for students, families, and staff as appropriate.
  • Promote wellness, disease prevention, and safe school environments.

Physical Demands

  • Physically able to occasionally lift and/or move up to fifty (50) pounds.
  • Ability to walk, stand, sit, stoop, bend, reach, kneel, crawl, and grasp as required to successfully perform all duties and requirements.
  • Ability to focus (adjust eye to bring an object into sharp focus), clear vision at twenty (20) inches or less, and clear vision at twenty (20) feet or more.
  • Will involve travel between multiple school sites within the district.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing
  • Registered Nurse License in the state of Washington.
  • Must be able to obtain ESA certification with the state of Washington.
  • Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification.
  • Experience in pediatric, public health, or school nursing.
  • Experience supporting students with disabilities or complex health needs preferred.

Conditions of Employment

Starting Date: 2025-2026 School Year (180 total contracted days). Salary: $65,202 - $125,686 annual salary, based on education and experience, per OEA CBA – 2025-2026 Salary Schedule. Retirement: Pension through Washington State Department of Retirement Systems.
