Job Title: Substitute Food Service Worker (on‑call/temp)

Location: Ganado, Arizona (Ganado Unified School District No. 20)

Purpose Statement: The job of Substitute Food Service Worker is to provide support to the food service activities at the assigned location with specific responsibilities for preparing and serving food items to students and/or school personnel, and maintaining food service facilities in a safe and sanitary condition.

Reports to: Cafeteria Manager

Essential Functions

• Arranges food and beverage items for the purpose of serving them to students and staff in an efficient manner.
• Attends unit meetings, in‑service training, workshops, etc. to gather information required to perform job functions.
• Cleans utensils, equipment, and storage, food preparation and serving areas to maintain required sanitary conditions.
• Inspects food items and/or supplies to verify quantity, quality and specifications of orders and to comply with mandated health standards.
• Inventories food, condiments and supplies to ensure availability of items required for meeting projected menu requirements.
• Maintains equipment, storage, food preparation and serving areas in a sanitary condition to comply with current health standards.
• Monitors kitchen and cafeteria areas to ensure a safe and sanitary working environment.
• Performs functions of other nutritional services positions, as requested by supervisor, to ensure adequate staff coverage within site nutritional services operations.
• Prepares food and beverage items to meet mandated nutritional and projected meal requirements.
• Reports equipment malfunctions to notify supervisor of need for repair and/or replacement.
• Serves one or more items of food to meet mandated nutritional requirements and/or requests of students and school personnel.

Other Functions

• Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

Skills: Adheres to safety practices; operates equipment found in a commercial kitchen; administers first aid. Two (2) years of experience in large‑quantity food preparation required.

Knowledge: Basic math; reading and following instructions; understanding multi‑step written and oral instructions. Also includes safety practices and procedures; quantifying food preparation and handling; sanitation practices; health standards and hazards; job‑related codes, laws, rules, regulations, policies; methods of quantity cooking.

Abilities: Schedules activities; collates data; operates job‑related equipment; works with others and diversity of individuals; problem‑solves using prescribed guidelines; meets deadlines and schedules; standardizes recipes and follows instructions.

Responsibilities: Working under direct supervision using standardized procedures; providing information and/or advising others; operating within a defined budget.

Working Environment

Requires significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some climbing and balancing, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling, and significant fine finger dexterity. Job requires 0% sitting, 25% walking, and 75% standing. Performed under temperature extremes and exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.

Experience and Education

Job‑related experience is preferred. Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
