Responsibilities

JOB DESCRIPTION FOR SOUTHWEST TRANSIT SUBSTITUTE DRIVER

Status: Non-Exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act

Hourly Pay: $14.00 per hour with standard Oklahoma Class D driver license. $15.00 per hour with Oklahoma Class C, Passenger Endorsement, DOT physical. (Must meet all parts of the criteria.) Please note: Effective June 16, 2021, drivers that do not maintain their CDL for any reason will be reclassified to a regular driver at the lower rate of pay.

Supervisory Relationships: Directly supervised by the Route Supervisor. Receives direction from the Dispatcher. Position does not have supervisory duties.

Purpose: The purpose of the Southwest Transit Substitute Driver is to provide courteous, safe, and efficient public transportation in the assigned area to fill in during peak times. This requires the ability to work a variety of shifts and to provide passenger assistance to the general public and those with mobility devices.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities
  1. Responsible for walk around inspections of vehicle prior to driving a vehicle. Will remain observant to possible problems and report any issues immediately to the proper person.
  2. Ensures that passengers are secure in the vehicle. All passengers must wear a seat belt while the bus is in motion. Properly secures mobility devices according to manufacturer’s directions. When a passenger requires an attendant, the driver will assist with the entrance to and exit from the vehicle. The attendant will be responsible prior to entering the vehicle and upon exit from the vehicle.
  3. Drivers are responsible for ensuring that children are not left on the bus. All safety protocols must be followed precisely for each trip. This includes a physical inspection of each row of seats, counting children upon entrance and upon exit, and any other required check.
  4. Drivers are responsible for ensuring that passengers are accounted for during routine stops.
  5. Completes paperwork for all trips. Writing must be legible and accurate. Must be willing to utilize technology as is deployed.
  6. Fuels the bus using the fleet account. Responsible for obtaining a receipt for each transaction, turning receipts in at the Transit office, and completing the bus log for the purchase. Will work with Safety/Maintenance Coordinator to obtain scheduled maintenance for vehicle.
  7. Drives routes as assigned. Maintains comfort of all passengers, such as adequate temperature control. Maintains control of vehicle such as enforcing safety rules. Assist passengers with boarding and exiting vehicle as needed.
  8. Drivers are responsible for cleaning vehicles routinely. This includes inside and outside. Required to comply with CDC guidance regarding health regulations, including routine sanitation of vehicles and wearing mask as required.
  9. Other related duties as assigned.
Performance Expectations
  1. Confidentiality of passenger information is essential.
  2. Complies with traffic laws and regulations.
  3. Comply with program guidelines. Abides by SOCAG Personnel Policies.
  4. Attend training as required. Must maintain any training or certification requirements.
  5. Is expected to perform the routes as efficiently as possible, to care for the vehicles so that both appearance and maintenance are kept in as good of condition as possible.
  6. Maintains accurate paperwork. Keeps the Route Supervisor and Safety/Maintenance Coordinator advised of vehicle or passenger issues.
  7. Must be able to work as part of a team, including volunteers and various trainees. Expect courteous, professional treatment of all passengers.
  8. Drivers do not ever enter homes of passengers. The passenger must be able to navigate independently or have an attendant. Drivers do not escort passengers into or out of a business or facility.
  9. Drivers must wear identification badge during all duty hours. Required to comply with CDC guidance regarding health regulations.
Qualifications
  1. Experience operating a commercial vehicle/bus is preferred. Must be able to meet driver qualifications according to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, Part 391. Must be able to meet Modivcare requirements. Must be able to obtain an Altus Air Force Base pass.
  2. Oklahoma driver’s license with an acceptable MVR. All drivers are encouraged to have a Class C CDL with a Passenger Endorsement and current DOT physical. Some driver positions are required to have the license.
  3. Must have the ability to complete paperwork accurately and legibly. Willing to learn and utilize technology.
  4. Negative pre-employment drug screen prior to employment with a current photo identification. During employment, employees are subject to drug testing according to SOCAG Personnel Policies.
  5. Criminal background checks are required and performed according to Oklahoma statutes and any program regulations.
Working Conditions
  1. Conditions include prolonged periods of sitting, assisting passengers with mobility devices including being able to push device up ramp, bending and kneeling to secure passenger restraint systems, and pushing vehicle down ramp for exit. Drivers detail vehicles including sweeping, cleaning, and washing.
  2. Must be able to interact and relate to the public in a positive, professional manner.
  3. Must be able to follow written and oral instructions. The ability to work as part of a team is important.
  4. Must be able to work a variety of schedules including days and times. Schedules include early mornings, afternoons, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Schedules are subject to change based on the system needs to accomplish the routes.
  5. Position is considered on-call and works as needed and scheduled by the Route Supervisor.
