Job summary

The City of Lewiston is seeking an on-call/relief Transit Driver to cover open routes during transit operating hours. You will operate a transit vehicle, collect fares, and ensure passenger safety and comfort on designated routes in Lewiston, Idaho.

Must have a valid Idaho CDL and pass DOT medical, drug screen, and background checks. Prior experience with elderly and disabled riders is preferred; flexible schedule with some evenings and weekends may be required.

Qualifications

• Five years minimum experience operating passenger vehicles in varied weather conditions.
• Valid Idaho Class C CDL with P or S endorsement and DOT Medical Exam proof, or ability to obtain within six months.

Job description

This position is an on‑call/relief role that will receive a limited recurring schedule, and otherwise be scheduled to cover open shifts or routes during transit operating hours (Monday-Friday 5:15am-7:30pm, Saturday 8:15am-3:30pm).

The posted wage is the hiring range in which the successful candidate will be placed based on experience and qualifications. The full wage range for the position is $17.11 - $24.89/hour. This position is open until filled.

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Operations Supervisor, the Transit Driver is responsible for safely operating a transit vehicle. The primary objective of the position is to provide safe, reliable, and efficient public transportation. The applicant must have prior driving experience, have a neat appearance, be courteous, timely, dependable, and work well with the public.

Essential Functions

• Operates a transit vehicle in a safe manner on a designated route and/or schedule, safely picking up and discharging passengers and operating vehicle onboard systems.
• Must possess a functional knowledge of the service area and transit system. Communicate effectively in person, and through a two‑way radio in a professional manner. Maintain a good rapport with passengers, the public, and city staff to provide friendly customer service, greeting customers in pleasant manner; gives information concerning routes, fares, schedules and transfers. Collects and counts fares; collects data such as passenger surveys, trip completion reports and safety reports involving observed accidents, hazards or other circumstances requiring the attention of the dispatcher or supervisory personnel.
• Performs pre‑trip vehicle inspections, checking fluids, tires, lights, instrumentation, brakes, and other equipment, documenting any observed damage or defect information.
• Attend training and/or informational meetings.
• Maintain the cleanliness of the assigned transit vehicle.
• Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with city policies, procedures, and safety practices.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• A high school diploma, GED or equivalent.
• Five years minimum experience with the safe operation of passenger cars, trucks or other motorized vehicles in a variety of weather conditions. A safe driving history for a minimum of three years & no convictions of reckless driving or driving under the influence for the past 10 years.
• Possession of a valid Commercial Driver License (Idaho Class C or out‑of‑state equivalent) with either P (Passenger) or S (School Bus) endorsement & proof of current DOT Medical Examination, or ability to obtain the above in the State of Idaho within the first six months of hire.
• Ability to pass a drug screen, driving record and background check upon offer of employment.
• Experience working with elderly and disabled populations is preferred.

Knowledge & Abilities

• Ability to operate transit vehicles in a safe manner, including in heavy traffic and during adverse weather conditions.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and some weekends.
• Candidate must possess a strong commitment to customer service and the communications skills to explain policies and procedures simply and calmly to customers; maintain a good working relationship with all supervisors, co-workers and the general public; interact in a professional manner which shows courtesy, consideration, tact, and demonstrates sensitivity to a diverse group of clientele including elderly and/or disabled clients.
• Ability to multi‑task and handle emergency situations with confidence, maintaining a calm demeanor when communicating by telephone and 2‑way radio, and performing in accordance with current policies and operational procedures of the Transit Division.
• Ability to operate an electronic mobile data terminal to track ridership, fares and route navigation.
• Ability to operate a passenger lift and safely secure mobility devices using a 4‑point restraint system.
• Able to report to work on time and in proper uniform.
• Candidate must maintain required credentials and certifications.
• Candidates are subjected to DOT random drug & alcohol testing throughout the term of employment.

Working Conditions

The employee will primarily work inside a transit bus or an outdoor environment and be subject to various types of weather conditions, noise, dust and odors. Physical activities include bending at the waist, crouching, climbing and walking over uneven surfaces, occasionally lifting, pushing, and pulling up to 50 pounds. While driving, the employee may sit in a driver’s seat for long periods of time; use a full range of one’s sense of hearing, including tone; pitch, and volume, using two‑way radio, and assisting passengers and public; use of one’s full range of vision, including depth perception, color vision, and acuity near and far. Possessing the physical ability to push and/or pull passengers in wheelchairs over short distances and stand and/or walk while performing vehicle inspections, conducting equipment maintenance, and assisting passengers or the general public is required.
