CLASS DESCRIPTION
Under the general supervision of the Facilities Director and/or Assistant Director, the substitute custodian performs general maintenance and custodial housekeeping duties in the absence of the regularly assigned custodian. Assignments are made on an as-needed basis and may occur at any district building, on either the day or night shift, at the elementary or secondary level.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Cleans and keeps in orderly condition all areas within School Department buildings, including classrooms, lavatories, washrooms, offices, break rooms, waiting areas, storage spaces, hallways, kitchens, gyms, auditoriums, and all other rooms within the building or on school grounds.
- Performs a combination of sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, scrubbing, and polishing floors; removing trash and refuse; dusting equipment, furniture, and fixtures; and polishing metal fixtures or trimmings.
- Cleans and disinfects lavatory fixtures daily, washes lavatory floors, and replenishes paper products and soap dispensers as needed.
- Dry mops classrooms daily and spot wet mops as needed; dusts window sills, ledges, and desks; empties wastebaskets and recycling bins; cleans sinks and strainers.
- Dry and wet mops corridors daily; on rainy and snowy days, mops wet areas dry with particular attention to entrances and stairways.
- Checks entrance windows and door glass daily and cleans as necessary.
- Sweeps and mops lunch areas after each lunch period; empties and washes rubbish barrels.
- Checks grounds daily and removes debris; assists with snow and ice removal and sanding of walkways as necessary.
- Checks plumbing, lighting, and building systems for leaks, burned-out lamps, or anything not operating properly, and reports issues to the maintenance office.
- Keeps custodial closets, storerooms, and boiler rooms clean and orderly; cleans floor equipment before storing.
- Assists in the general maintenance of the school building and makes minor maintenance repairs.
- Secures the building and follows all opening, closing, and alarm procedures as assigned.
- In case of an emergency after school hours or on weekends, pages the night supervisor or Director/Assistant Director of Facilities.
- Attends promptly and courteously to requests of the Principal in the assigned building; notifies the Director of Facilities/Security before leaving the building during working hours.
- Performs any other duties assigned by the school principal and/or Facilities Director.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Working knowledge of manual, electrical, and internal combustion cleaning and grounds equipment, such as floor polishers, vacuum cleaners, and snow blowers, and of tools required for minor maintenance repairs.
- Must be able to communicate in English at the proficiency level necessary to recognize hazardous material symbols, poison symbols, and other caution signs commonly encountered during custodial functions.
- Must be able to communicate orally with students, faculty, principals, and supervisors, particularly in emergency situations such as fire evacuations and medical emergencies.
- Knowledge of applicable building and safety code requirements.
- Must be able to understand and safely operate common custodial equipment, snow clearing equipment, grounds maintenance equipment, and minor maintenance tools.
- Must be able to work independently with minimal direction and adapt quickly to unfamiliar buildings and routines.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent; or graduation from a trade or vocational school.
- Must have a valid Driver's License.
- Must be able to read, write, and speak English proficiently.
- Prior custodial or building maintenance experience preferred.
Pre-Employment Requirements:
- National and state criminal background check (BCI), including fingerprinting, prior to the first assignment.
- Completion of all district onboarding and mandatory safety training prior to the first assignment.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
- Per diem, as-needed basis; no guaranteed number of days or hours.
- Assignments may be day or night shift and may be at any district building.
- Hourly rate of $____ per hour.
- Substitute positions are not benefit-eligible.
