Job summary

Palo Alto Unified School District is seeking a Substitute Custodian to help maintain clean, safe school facilities across multiple sites. The role requires basic custodial experience and the ability to perform routine cleaning tasks with attention to safety and efficiency.

Responsibilities include cleaning classrooms, offices, cafeterias and gym spaces, restocking supplies, and reporting hazards. The position is hourly as needed and based on the district's evaluation of needs.

Qualifications

• Equivalent to high school graduation.
• One year of custodial experience in large or medium size institutions; school experience preferred.
• Satisfactory history of evaluations.
• Experience using cleaning materials and equipment with skill and efficiency in large or medium size institutions; school experience preferred.
• Ability to maintain tact, courtesy and cooperative relationships with those contacted during work.
• Specific duties include: vacuuming, sweeping, scrubbing, mopping, waxing, and buffing floors; cleaning offices, cafeteria, gym and other buildings; refilling paper and sanitary holders; cleaning and polishing chrome; dusting and polishing furniture and woodwork; disinfecting lavatories, fountains and waste containers; replacing light bulbs and locking doors; and reporting hazards.

• Refill paper and other sanitary holders.

• Support events and assist in preparing for special occasions.
• Direct visitors and safeguard district property.
• Ensure tools and equipment are cleaned, maintained, stored, and secured.

• Clean and polish chrome in bathroom areas
• Dust, wash, wax, and polish furniture and woodwork
• Clean and disinfect lavatories, drinking fountains, and waste containers
• Replace light bulbs, turns out lights and locks doors
• Pick up paper and other refuse from grounds
• Assist in preparing for special events
• Report sanitary and safety hazards and the need for repairs to proper authorities
• Direct visitors and safeguard district property
• Ensure that tools and equipment are properly cleaned, maintained, stored, and secured
• Other duties as assigned.
