Job summary

MSD of Shakamak is seeking a Substitute Custodian to maintain school facilities, classrooms, offices, restrooms, and common areas in a clean, safe condition. You will help create a welcoming environment for students, staff, and community members.

Responsibilities include cleaning duties, floor care, restocking supplies, setting up rooms for events, and assisting with snow removal. A high school diploma and ability to pass a background check are required, with prior custodial experience preferred.

Reports To: Maintenance & Custodial Director

Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Maintenance & Custodial Director, the Substitute Custodian is responsible for maintaining assigned school buildings, classrooms, offices, restrooms, and common areas in a clean, orderly, and secure condition. The position plays a vital role in ensuring a safe, welcoming, and well-maintained environment for students, staff, and community members.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Clean restrooms, classrooms, hallways, offices, locker rooms, and other assigned areas.
• Sweep, mop, vacuum, strip, wax, and buff floors; shampoo carpets as needed.
• Empty trash and recycling containers; ensure proper sanitation and disposal.
• Wash windows, walls, fixtures, and furniture; dust and polish surfaces.
• Refill and restock restroom and cleaning supplies.
• Set up and prepare rooms for meetings, events, and special activities.
• Operate and maintain custodial tools and equipment in safe working condition.
• Assist with snow removal, grounds upkeep, and deliveries as needed.
• Perform other duties as assigned to support district operations.

Education & Experience:

• High School Diploma or equivalent required.
• Prior custodial, maintenance, or facilities experience preferred.
• Must be able to pass a background check

Knowledge of:

• Modern cleaning techniques, materials, and safety standards.
• Proper use and care of cleaning chemicals, tools, and equipment.
• Safe lifting, moving, and handling procedures.
• Basic building maintenance practices.

Ability to:

• Maintain a clean and safe environment for students and staff.
• Follow oral and written directions.
• Work independently and manage time effectively.

Physical Demands & Working Conditions

• Standing and walking for extended periods.
• Lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling objects up to 75 pounds.
• Bending, kneeling, reaching, and climbing ladders as needed.
• Exposure to cleaning chemicals, fumes, dust, and varying temperatures.
• Work may occur both indoors and outdoors, occasionally in inclement weather.
