  • Stocks toilet paper, paper towels, soap, and other sanitary supplies.
  • Vacuums, sweeps, mops, and otherwise maintains floors.
  • Dusts and cleans furniture, woodwork, walls, fixtures, and other surfaces.
  • Empties and cleans waste and recycling receptacles.
  • Washes windows, walls, and other assigned surfaces.
  • Cleans and disinfects areas as required.
  • Sets up and prepares rooms for meetings, athletic events, activities, and other special events.
  • Reports needed repairs, maintenance concerns, safety hazards, and building issues to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Performs floor care, including waxing, stripping, refinishing, and other required floor maintenance.
  • Operates carpet-cleaning equipment and shampoos carpets as assigned.
  • Picks up paper, trash, and other debris from building grounds and exterior areas.
  • Moves and/or rearranges furniture, chairs, desks, tables, and other equipment as needed.
  • Maintains assigned areas in accordance with district cleanliness and safety standards.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Head Custodian.

Part-Time Custodian Job Description

Job Title: Part-Time Custodian

Work Year: 260 days

Work Schedule: Up to 29 hours per week

Department: Facilities

Reports To: Head Custodian

Starting Salary: $16.00 per hour

JOB SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Head Custodian, and/or Foreman, the Part-Time Custodian is responsible for maintaining assigned areas of the school building, grounds, and office spaces in a clean, orderly, sanitary, and secure condition during the assigned shift.

The Part-Time Custodian performs routine custodial duties, assists with building preparation and special events, reports maintenance and safety concerns, and performs other related duties as assigned.

This position is limited to 29 hours per week and is considered a part-time position.

DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Cleans restrooms, dressing rooms, shower rooms, classrooms, offices, hallways, and common areas.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

  • Modern cleaning methods, including cleaning chalkboards, whiteboards, carpets, furniture, walls, floors, and fixtures.
  • Proper methods, techniques, materials, disinfectants, tools, and equipment used in custodial work.
  • Safety best practices and safe work methods.
  • Proper lifting and material-handling techniques.
  • Requirements for maintaining school buildings in a safe, clean, sanitary, and orderly condition.
  • Basic oral and written communication skills.
  • Applicable health and safety regulations.
  • Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and proper handling of cleaning chemicals.
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.
ABILITY TO
  1. Maintain assigned areas of a school building, group of buildings, or office space in a clean, orderly, sanitary, and secure manner.
  2. Use common cleaning materials and equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
  3. Learn and follow established custodial procedures, methods, and schedules.
  4. Observe and report safety hazards and the need for maintenance or repairs.
  5. Maintain tools and equipment in clean and proper working order.
  6. Operate custodial equipment, including floor strippers, buffers, carpet cleaners, vacuum cleaners, and other power and hand tools.
  7. Move and arrange furniture and equipment for meetings, activities, and special events.
  8. Perform minor repairs as directed and within the scope of the position.
  9. Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  10. Meet assigned schedules, deadlines, and cleaning standards.
  11. Work independently with appropriate direction and supervision.
  12. Work cooperatively and professionally with students, staff, administrators, visitors, and other district employees.
  13. Maintain confidentiality and conduct oneself in a professional manner while working in a school environment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

Working Conditions:

  • Work may be performed in indoor and outdoor environments and may be subject to changing weather and temperatures, including temperatures exceeding 90 degrees at times.
  • Regular exposure to fumes, dust, odors, heights, and loud noises.
  • Exposure to cleaning agents and chemicals, including disinfectants, graffiti remover, floor stripper, floor wax, propane, paint thinner, and other custodial products.
  • Direct contact with students, staff, administrators, visitors, and members of the public.
  • Work may require the use of ladders and working at varying heights.
  • Possible exposure to bloodborne pathogens and/or bodily fluids.

Physical Demands:

  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate custodial equipment and tools.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Ability to see clearly at varying distances to perform custodial duties.
  • Ability to communicate effectively through verbal, auditory, and written means.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull objects weighing up to 75 pounds.
  • Ability to bend, kneel, crouch, and stoop as necessary.
  • Ability to reach overhead, above the shoulders, and horizontally.
  • Ability to climb ladders and work from varying heights as necessary.
  • Ability to perform repetitive physical activities associated with custodial work.
QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Previous custodial, maintenance, or related experience preferred but not required.
  • Valid Driver's License, when required for assigned duties.
  • Successful completion of required background clearance.
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
