Job summary

Park County School District 6 is seeking a part-time Crossing Guard to support safe student transit to and from school. The role reports to the Director of Transportation and is split between morning and afternoon shifts across all schools within the district.

The Crossing Guard will direct traffic, assist students and families, communicate safety policies, and maintain equipment while contributing to a positive learning environment and school safety initiatives.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma is required or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of safety practices and procedures; traffic laws.
  • Ability to schedule activities, read instructions, and handle multiple tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Directs traffic to ensure student safety at crosswalks.
  • Assists students, parents, staff and visitors for safe access to and from locations.
  • Maintains equipment such as stop signs and safety vests; reports incidents to school staff.

Purpose Statement

The job of Crossing Guard is done for the purpose/s of providing support to the instructional process with specific responsibilities for ensuring for the safety and welfare of students in transit to and/or from school and communicating observations and/or incidents that may impact the general well being of students.

This job reports to Director of Transportation.

Part Time position split between morning and afternoon.

Essential Functions
  • Assists students, parents, staff and visitors for the purpose of providing safe access to and from assigned location.
  • Communicates safety and security policies and enforcement procedures to students, staff and visitors for the purpose of ensuring their understanding of such information and the potential consequences of violation.
  • Directs traffic for the purpose of ensuring the safety of students and other pedestrians.
  • Maintains job related equipment (e.g. stop sign, vests, street signs, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring availability of required items.
  • Monitors student behavior entering and exiting cross walk area for the purpose of ensuring student compliance with established guidelines and maintaining a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Participates in unit meetings, in-service training, workshops, etc. for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform job functions.
  • Refers incidents including personal injuries, altercations, suspicious activities, rule violations, etc. to appropriate school personnel for the purpose of ensuring follow-up in accordance with administrative, site security and student safety guidelines.
  • Responds positively to all children for the purpose of encouraging and supporting a positive attitude toward education.
  • Responds to a variety of situations (e.g. accidents, injuries, vandalism, suspicious activities, etc.) for the purpose of taking the appropriate action to resolve immediate safety and/or security concerns.
Other Functions
  • Assists other personnel, as may be required, for the purpose of ensuring an efficient and effective work environment.
Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adhering to safety practices and administering first aid; enforcing rules and regulations.

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math; read and follow instructions; and understand multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: safety practices and procedures; traffic laws.

ABILITY is required to schedule activities and/or meetings; collate data; and use basic, job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing specific, defined processes; and operate equipment using defined methods. Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with specific, job-related data; and utilize specific, job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires following prescribed guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is limited to moderate. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: displaying tact and courtesy; being attentive to detail; possessing sound emotional control; practicing superior human relations skills with people of all ages; and maintaining confidentiality.

Responsibilities

Work Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 0% sitting, 70% walking, and 30% standing. The job is performed under temperature extremes and under conditions with exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.

Experience / Education / Equivalency

Job related experience is desired. High school diploma or equivalent.
