Job summary

Coast Community College District seeks a Substitute—Child Care Assistant and Early Childhood Lab Assistant to assist in caring for infants to preschoolers. You will support developmentally appropriate activities in two campus facilities, adhering to health and safety standards and confidentiality with families and staff.

Temporary appointments may exceed 130–160 days per year; working hours will be arranged with the supervisor.

Qualifications

• Equivalent of a high school diploma and experience with infants, toddlers, or preschool children, or completion of minimum childcare licensing standards.
• Six months of experience in a licensed child-care center or comparable program.
• Must possess or be eligible for Pediatric CPR and Pediatric First Aid certificates.
• May require a valid driver license.

• Assist with planning and implementing daily activities based on children's needs and interests.
• Maintain order by observing and focusing on activities and behaviors of children in group activities.
• Care for groups of infants, toddlers, or preschool-age children.
• Maintain health and safety standards per OSHA regulations, Title 22, and Title 5.
• Perform light housekeeping and child maintenance duties including cleaning, disinfecting, washing, and sanitizing toys and surfaces.
• Develop positive relationships with parents and staff while keeping information confidential.
• Other related duties to support the position’s objective.
• Abide by all District policies and procedures, including Board Policy 3050.

Definition

The Substitute—Child Care Assistant and Early Childhood Lab Assistant assists in providing care for infant to preschool-aged children. The Substitute supports the implementation of instructional and developmentally age‑appropriate activities that promote the whole child's development. The OCC Campus has two facilities, Children's Center and EC Lab School, that support student services and the Instructional Departments.

Under general supervisor, substitute employees perform a variety of work in support of a college or district program or office. Non‑academic, non‑classified substitute employees are appointed temporarily when recruiting to fill a permanent position or replace classified employees who are temporarily absent from duty. Substitute employees are at‑will employees, have no entitlement rights to any position, and their employment shall not result in the displacement of classified personnel.

Substitute employees who are appointed temporarily while recruiting for the permanent position may not exceed 130 working days within a fiscal year (July 1 – June 30). Those who temporarily replace a classified employee may not exceed 160 working days within a fiscal year (July 1 – June 30). Retired CalPERS Annuitants may not exceed 960 hours in a fiscal year.

Representative Duties

• Performs other related duties as assigned that support the objective of the position.
• Required to abide by all District policies and procedures, including Board Policy 3050 – Code of Professional Ethics.

Qualifications and Physical Demands

Minimum Qualifications: Equivalent of a high school diploma and experience working with infants, toddlers, or preschool children, or successful completion of minimum childcare licensing standards.

Education and Experience: Equivalent or combination of education and experience.

Licenses and Certificates: 12 semester units (or equivalent) in early childhood education or child development; at least six months of experience in a licensed child‑care center or comparable program; or possession of a Children's Center permit issued by the California Commission on Teacher Preparation and Licensing. Must possess or be eligible for a Pediatric CPR Certificate and a valid Pediatric First Aid Certificate. May require a valid driver license.

Additional Requirements: Current TB test, physical examination, fingerprint check, and proof of immunization against influenza, pertussis, and measles. Conditional employment for up to 30 days may be granted if immunization records are pending, provided a written statement attests to current immunity or exemption.

Work Conditions: Work is performed indoors and outdoors, with exposure to communicable diseases.

Conditions of Employment

Substitute vacancy employees are appointed temporarily when recruiting to fill a permanent position. Substitute non‑vacancy employees replace classified employees who are temporarily absent. Salary Placement ES‑109 (Salary Schedule). Employment is contingent upon verification of employment history, background verification, eligibility to work in the U.S., and approval by the CCCD Board of Trustees. Short‑term/temporary assignments do not offer fringe benefits or pay for holidays or time not worked.

Hours of work and effective date of employment will be arranged with the supervisor. Early evening availability is desirable.

Regular attendance is essential; the inability to meet attendance requirements may preclude retention.

The person holding this position is required to be a mandated reporter under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and must comply with Coast Community College District policies, procedures, and Title IX.
