Job summary

Shelton School District is seeking a substitute School Bus Driver to transport students on scheduled routes under various weather conditions. The role requires CDL Class B with a School Bus and Passenger endorsement and the ability to pass a background check.

The position offers an hourly wage of $18.00–$22.15 and eligibility for fringe benefits under the district’s bargaining agreement. This is a substitute role with no guaranteed hours for the 2026-2027 year.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

Job description

Posting Information:

This is a substitute position with no guarantee of hours or days for the 2026 -2027 school year.

Interview Process:

Salary:

$18.00 - $22.15 per hour

FLSA Status:

Non-Exempt (overtime eligible)

Job Summary:

School Bus Driver's support Shelton School District's Strategic Plan by operating school buses under all types of weather conditions, including but not limited to fog, rain, hail, sleet, snow, and ice. Transport students and other authorized persons to and from school. Perform other transportation duties deemed necessary by the administration.

Minimum Requirements:
  • Minimum age 21 years.
  • High school graduation or equivalent.
  • Possess a valid Washington State School Bus Driver's Certificate.
  • Possess a valid Washington State Driver License with the appropriate endorsement (must be uploaded to application).
  • Must have valid CDL Class B, School Bus and Passenger endorsement.
  • The ability to pass a federal background check.
  • Ability to have sufficient strength and agility to move about in an over-turned bus as required to aid students in evacuating the bus.
  • Ability and hearing capacity must be sufficient to detect and distinguish traffic sounds occurring from any direction outside the bus, such as horns, whistles, sirens, bells, trains, etc., from a distance which will allow adequate time for defensive or evasive action to avoid a hazardous situation.
  • Ability of vision - 20/40 minimum, with or without correction; approximately 140 degrees peripheral, which as a single criterion shall not be excluding; and depth perception adequate to reasonably determine distance and closing rate of other moving vehicles from a stationary or moving school bus. Eye coordination to avoid diplopia; color vision must be adequate to distinguish the colors red, green, and amber of a traffic light.

Essential Functions:
  • Maintains control of student passengers as related to safety.
  • Reports unsafe acts or conditions which require the attention of any person other than the driver.
  • Drives a school bus on a scheduled route.
  • Completes forms, records, and reports as required by state and local district policy.
  • Successfully completes school bus driver training programs and courses established by the Washington State Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) or the school district.
  • Operates a school bus in accordance with the laws of the State of Washington and policies as set forth by OSPI.
  • Operates and services all school bus equipment and accessories including, but not limited to, fire extinguishers, highway warning kits, snow chains, sanders, first aid kits, etc.
  • Performs required operational and safety inspection of the school bus and related equipment.
  • Cleans and services the school bus including interior and exterior sweeping, washing, installation of fuel, oil, coolant, tire inflation, etc.
  • Operates all hand and foot controls installed in the school bus as required by the Washington State (Minimum) School Bus Specifications.
  • Performs basic first aid as appropriate, which may include CPR.
  • Accurately and legibly completes forms, records, time sheets, trip requests, route studies, trouble reports, misconduct reports, and other clerical type activities as appropriate.
  • Assures that tools and other miscellaneous articles are properly restrained and compartmentalized and that no passenger boards with materials which might present a hazard in case of sudden stops or accident.
  • Reports to operations any malfunction needing repair on the bus in their charge.
  • Attends trainings and meetings as directed or appropriate.
  • Performs other relevant duties as assigned.
WORKING CONDITIONS:

School environment. Requires frequent standing, walking, and sitting. Must be able to speak, hear and see. Required to deal with a wide range of situations, behaviors, and information. Requires dexterity in the operation of a school bus.
