Job summary

Ampirical in the United States seeks a Power Commissioning Engineer II/III/Staff with substation experience for a 100% travel role. Remote with travel to sites across the Western US; candidates must live in or relocate to the Western US.

You will develop commissioning plans, create relay settings, perform testing, verify protection schemes, and support SCADA verification. Travel regionally or nationally, with overnight stays, and collaborate with engineers, utilities, and field teams.

Qualifications

• ABET-accredited bachelor's degree in a relevant field.
• 2+ years testing/commissioning substations (II); 4+ (III); 6+ (Sr); 8+ (Staff).
• Valid driver's license and ability to pass drug/background screenings.
• No travel restrictions.
• NICET Level I (Power Testing) or higher preferred.
• Ability to obtain TWIC card.

Responsibilities

• Develop commissioning plans for substation projects, including physical design and protection & control components.
• Create relay settings files for SEL, GE, and Basler relays using protection summaries and AC/DC schematics.
• Perform testing and commissioning on substation equipment (circuit breakers, transformers, CTs/PTs, switches, bus, relays).
• Conduct insulation resistance, contact resistance, power factor, TTR, winding resistance, timing, SFRA, GPS-based relay testing.
• Test current transformers and relay panels; verify full protective relay functionality.
• Support SCADA/RTU I/O verification and automation testing.
• Interpret one-line diagrams, wiring schematics, protection logic, and as-built drawings.
• Operate Megger, Doble, Vanguard, and Omicron test equipment.
• Maintain accurate test reports and documentation.
