Job summary

Ampirical is seeking a Power Commissioning Engineer III with substations experience for a remote role focused on the Western United States. The position involves developing commissioning plans, relay settings, and substation testing while traveling 50–75% regionally or nationally.

Ideal candidates have ABET-accredited degrees or equivalent, NICET Power Testing, and extensive testing/commissioning experience.

Qualifications

• ABET-accredited Bachelor’s degree required or equivalent
• Associate degree in substation and relay tech with 10+ years exp
• High school diploma with 12+ years exp in testing/commissioning substations
• Military technical background (Prime Power, Electrical, Instrumentation) with 10+ years exp
• NICET Level I (Power Testing) or higher preferred

Responsibilities

• Develop commissioning plans for substation projects including P&C components
• Create relay settings files for SEL, GE, Basler relays
• Perform testing and commissioning of substations (CBs, transformers, CTs/PTs)
• Conduct insulation, contact, power factor testing and GPS-based relay testing
• Test and verify relay protection and bus/line protection schemes
• Support SCADA/RTU I/O verification and automation testing
• Adjust operation of group-operated switches and protective schemes
• Troubleshoot relay misoperations and equipment failures
• Read and verify one-line diagrams and wiring schematics
• Maintain test reports and as-built drawings with accurate documentation
• Ensure compliance with NETA, NERC PRC, OSHA, NFPA 70E standards
• Travel regionally or nationally 50–75% for field work
