Job summary

Flexicrew Technical Services in Houston seeks an experienced Substation Steel Engineering Department head to build and grow a high-voltage division, hire and onboard engineers and drafters, and implement mentoring and development programs.

You will direct design and analysis of substation steel structures up to 500 kV, establish standards and workflows, and partner with project management, sales, drafting, and manufacturing to deliver sealed deliverables on schedule and budget.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering with a structural emphasis.
• Active Professional Engineer (PE) license — Texas preferred, or obtainable by reciprocity within six months.
• 8+ years of high-voltage substation steel design experience.
• Expert knowledge of ASCE 113, AISC 360, ASCE 7, and ASCE 48.
• Proficiency with STAAD.Pro, RISA-3D, and RISAConnection.
• Experience with structural steel detailing, bolted and welded connection design, and fabrication-drawing interpretation.
• Demonstrated ability to develop engineering standards and workflows and to mentor junior staff.
• Strong organizational, time-management, and communication skills.

• Stand up and grow the Substation Steel Engineering Department — hiring, onboarding, and developing engineering and drafting staff.
• Lead and mentor a team of up to five direct reports, providing performance feedback and professional development.
• Direct, review, and approve the design and analysis of substation steel structures up to 500 kV — tapered tubular A-frames, H-frame dead-ends, static masts, low-profile structures, bus supports, and switch stands.
• Oversee engineering calculations, drawing packages, and sealed deliverables.
• Establish department workflows, design standards, methodologies, tools, and best practices that support scalable growth.
• Coordinate team resources to meet project schedule, quality, and budget targets.
• Prepare and approve proposal packages, technical scopes, and design estimates.
• Partner with project management, sales, drafting, and manufacturing teams, and serve as the department’s technical lead with utilities, consultants, and EPC partners.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
