Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced Civil/Structural Engineering Manager to lead a team supporting high-voltage substation and grid infrastructure projects. This is a hands-on leadership role combining people management, technical oversight, resource planning, and project execution.
The successful candidate will guide civil and structural engineering activities across complex EPC projects while developing engineering talent, improving design processes, and ensuring projects are delivered safely, efficiently, and to a high technical standard.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of civil and structural engineers supporting substation projects.
- Manage staffing, workload forecasting, resource allocation, recruiting, succession planning, and employee development.
- Provide technical oversight for civil/structural design activities associated with AIS, GIS, FACTS, HVDC, and related high-voltage facilities.
- Guide engineering teams through project kickoff, detailed design, design reviews, construction support, and project closeout.
- Oversee designs for:Equipment and building foundations
- Structural steel and equipment support structures
- Control buildings and electrical enclosures
- Duct banks, trenches, and manholes
- Drainage and site development
- Lightning mast and dead-end structures
- Monitor engineering schedules, budgets, quality, technical risks, and design changes.
- Coordinate work between internal engineering disciplines, external consultants, subcontractors, suppliers, and project teams.
- Review and approve technical deliverables and ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, and customer requirements.
- Support proposal and tender activities by developing engineering scopes, labor estimates, execution strategies, and technical clarifications.
- Evaluate engineering subcontractors and support procurement with technical specifications and supplier assessments.
- Drive continuous improvement through design standards, lessons learned, engineering guides, templates, training, and process improvements.
- Support technical problem solving during project execution and construction.
- Promote strong safety, quality, accountability, and engineering best practices across the team.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
- 15+ years of civil/structural engineering experience involving high-voltage substations or comparable power infrastructure.
- Strong background working on EPC or design-build substation projects.
- 5+ years of experience leading civil/structural engineering teams.
- Active Professional Engineer (PE) license in the United States with the ability to review and seal engineering work.
- Strong knowledge of civil and structural design requirements for HV substations.
- Experience managing engineering schedules, budgets, design quality, and multidisciplinary interfaces.
- Familiarity with U.S. and Canadian utility standards, building codes, and applicable civil/structural design standards.
Preferred Background
- Master's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
- Previous responsibility for hiring, performance management, training, workforce planning, and career development.
- Experience designing foundations and structures for transformers, breakers, disconnect switches, reactors, instrument transformers, GIS equipment, synchronous condensers, STATCOM systems, and similar equipment.
- Familiarity with 3D substation design, BIM, and Revit.
- Experience reviewing architectural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing interfaces for substation buildings.
- Project management experience within power transmission, substation, or EPC environments.
- Strong technical judgment, communication, and stakeholder-management skills.
- Ability to lead engineering teams through complex technical and commercial project challenges.
