Overview
We are seeking an experienced Substation Project Manager to join a growing power-delivery organization supporting major substation construction and electrical infrastructure projects.
This role is ideal for a hands-on project professional who understands utility construction and can take ownership of projects from planning and execution through financial closeout. The right candidate will work closely with customers, field operations, engineering teams, subcontractors, vendors, and internal leadership to ensure projects are delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and to customer expectations.
This is an excellent opportunity for a project manager looking to take ownership of complex substation projects while growing within an established power-delivery organization.
Responsibilities
- Manage substation construction projects through planning, execution, financial control, and closeout.
- Own project schedules, budgets, costs, forecasts, and overall financial performance.
- Coordinate closely with field operations to ensure projects are executed safely, efficiently, and according to customer requirements.
- Serve as a primary point of contact for utility customers throughout project execution.
- Monitor project schedules and manage execution against established milestones and deadlines.
- Coordinate procurement, materials, equipment, subcontractors, and other project resources.
- Track project costs, forecasts, change orders, and financial performance.
- Support contract administration, change management, risk management, and project documentation.
- Identify project risks and develop solutions to keep projects on schedule and within budget.
- Work closely with field leadership, engineers, customers, vendors, and subcontractors.
- Participate in customer meetings, project reviews, progress meetings, and operational planning.
- Provide regular project updates and communicate performance to leadership.
- Support project forecasting, reporting, and closeout activities.
- Resolve field, customer, scheduling, procurement, and commercial issues as they arise.
- Maintain strong relationships with utility customers and project stakeholders.
- Spend meaningful time around active project execution and field operations rather than operating strictly as a desk-based PM.
- Lead, mentor, and coordinate project staff based on project scope and experience.
Qualifications
Required
- 3+ years of relevant experience within the utility, power-delivery, electrical construction, EPC, or related infrastructure industry.
- Experience managing construction projects involving budgets, schedules, costs, customers, and field execution.
- Experience with substation construction or related electrical utility projects.
- Strong understanding of construction project execution and project financial management.
- Ability to read, understand, and manage against project schedules.
- Strong Excel and project reporting skills.
- Excellent communication, organization, and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to work effectively with both executive-level customers and field personnel.
- Willingness to travel to project sites as required.
Preferred
- Experience managing substation construction projects.
- Utility contractor or EPC experience.
- Experience with high-voltage electrical systems and substation infrastructure.
- Experience with substation equipment, electrical construction, commissioning, or field operations.
- Experience with procurement and subcontractor management.
- Experience with contract administration and change orders.
- Experience with Primavera P6, MS Project, or similar scheduling platforms.
- Experience with Power BI or other project reporting tools.
- Experience managing multiple projects or project teams simultaneously.
- Experience working directly with utility customers.
- Experience with transmission or distribution projects in addition to substation work.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is a hands-on, hungry, and self-starting Project Manager who wants to own projects and take on increasing responsibility.
You should be comfortable sitting in a customer meeting discussing budgets, schedules, contracts, and project performance, then spending time in the field working directly with construction and project teams.
Strong candidates will bring commercial awareness, field execution experience, customer relationship skills, and a technical understanding of substation construction.
We strongly encourage candidates with experience managing utility substation projects, electrical construction, EPC projects, or power-delivery infrastructure to apply.
