Job summary

Southern Company is seeking multiple Substation Physical Designer/Engineer positions based in Birmingham, AL. The role focuses on designing substations, producing CAD drawings, and coordinating with field teams. Hybrid work with in-office and field presence is expected, with travel up to 25%.

Positions offer diverse educational requirements and opportunities for advancement within the Substation Physical Design group. Relocation may be provided for eligible candidates.

Qualifications

• Strong understanding of substation equipment is preferred.
• Southern Company design experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Prepare high quality design packages needed to construct substations using CAD-based tools per Southern Company standards.
• Design physical aspects of substations (Foundation, Grounding, Conduit, Control House, Section Drawings, Electrical Bus).
• Transmit drawings and specifications into SCST Vault per procedures.
• Provide Quality Assurance reviews and mentorship to designers/engineers.
• Interact with manufacturers and vendors to resolve equipment issues.
• Support Substation Construction, Field Services, Project Management and Substation Maintenance.
• Perform site visits and occasional overnight travel.
• Participate in substation design review meetings.
