Job summary

Mesa Associates, Inc. is seeking a mid-level Substation Protection & Controls Engineering Technologist to advance in the electric power industry. This role supports a national client base from Mesa’s Power Delivery Substation group.

The candidate will collaborate with engineers, drafters, and designers, develop diagrams and BoMs, and apply protection fundamentals while traveling 1–2 nights per month to client sites. Opportunities include mentorship and project responsibility.

Qualifications

• Associate or bachelor’s degree in Engineering Technology.
• 3+ years of transmission substation P&C design experience (12kV–230kV).
• Location within commuting distance of Knoxville, TN or Chattanooga, TN.
• Understanding of protection fundamentals (CTs, VTs, differential, CB, line protection).
• Proficient in design software (AutoCAD; Bluebeam Revu).
• Independent problem-solver with ability to document solutions with minimal supervision.
• Effective communicator capable of presenting findings to leadership, clients, and teams.

Responsibilities

• Work on a team of drafters, designers, and engineers.
• Receive mentorship from senior engineers and grow knowledge.
• Create/review single-line/three-line diagrams, panel layouts, AC/DC schematics, wiring diagrams, BoMs.
• Examine drawings and calculations to locate inconsistencies and propose corrective actions.
• Identify bottlenecks and develop internal tools to improve processes.
• Ensure deliverables meet code, client requirements, and Mesa QA procedures.
