Substation Lead Engineer - P&C

Westwood Professional Services, Inc. is seeking a Substation Lead Engineer - P&C to join our team. The Lead Substation P&C Engineer will serve as an engineer on electric substation design projects for high-voltage utility systems and renewable energy interconnection projects. The role involves applying NESC, NEC, and other applicable codes and standards, and independently producing one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, potential and current schematics, control schematics, alarm schematics, protection and control specifications, and I/O mapping. Familiarity with protection scheme functionality is required; relay settings development is preferred but not required. The engineer will collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to meet project milestones and expectations. Westwood's team is highly experienced and dedicated to providing professional services to our clients.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Design all aspects of high voltage (4kV – 230kV) and EHV (above 230kV) substation projects, including: development of one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, potential and current schematics, control schematics, alarm schematics, communications schematics, wiring diagrams, protection and control specifications, I/O and points mapping, relay settings, design calculations, construction documentation, technical support, procurement, construction, active coordination, and seamless collaboration with P&C designers and other project team members.
• Mentor and train lower-level professionals, including recent graduates, and focus on high-quality work and continuous improvement.
• Manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment, identify key client interests, and communicate these to the project team. Serve as a technical specialist in system protection and communication, providing guidance and consultation.
• Advise management on maximizing ROI, attend client technical review meetings, and act as project technical lead and QA/QC lead as needed.

Required Experience

• Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from an accredited program.
• Minimum of 8 years of related experience in high voltage substation design – P&C.
• PE License.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD or Bentley MicroStation.
• Strong familiarity with NEC and National Electrical Safety Code.
• Good industry knowledge and awareness of technology trends specific to substations.

Preferred Experience

• Experience developing relay settings, protection device coordination, and using programs like ASPEN One Liner or CYME Dist.
• Knowledge of construction practices, proposal writing, project estimating, scheduling, project controls, and previous project team leadership or supervision.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with a focus on results, decision-making, planning, conflict management, and customer service.
