Job summary

HDR, Inc. seeks a Substation Engineering Manager in Portland, OR to lead engineering teams and deliver complex substation projects in the Power sector.

You’ll work with senior engineers and external clients to shape technical approaches and ensure safety and reliability. You will collaborate with Project Managers, guide technical execution, drive quality control per HDR QMS, mentor junior staff, and manage scope, schedule, and budgets across multiple sites.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering
  • 7 years related experience
  • A minimum 2 years project management experience
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license
  • MS Office and MS Project experience is required (Access experience would be plus)
  • Demonstrated leadership skills

  • Develop a partnership with Project Managers, wherein the PMs are responsible for scope, schedules, budgets, and client management, and the EM is responsible for technical execution of projects.
  • Work closely with the technical leadership team in development and execution of processes and procedures surrounding quality control, technical expertise, and project delivery.
  • Coordinate and/or perform quality checks and reviews for all project deliverables per HDR QMS requirements.
  • Work independently and may direct, mentor, train, and/or supervise one or more Project Engineers, EITs, or CADD/Designers.
  • Lead multiple projects concurrently, utilizing teams in different locations.
  • Assist with developing technical papers and/or presentations for industry conferences or events.
  • Participate in project reviews as needed.

Substation Engineering Manager

Responsibilities
  • Develop a partnership with Project Managers, wherein the PMs are responsible for scope, schedules, budgets, and client management, and the EM is responsible for technical execution of projects.
  • Work closely with the technical leadership team in development and execution of processes and procedures surrounding quality control, technical expertise, and project delivery.
  • Work closely with local and national Power Delivery leadership to develop internal trainings, mentorship plans, and technical development plans for junior staff.
  • Develop and implement a project execution plan for the technical aspect of projects.
  • Assign project tasks and provide technical guidance to project team members.
  • Support the technical aspect of scope, schedule, and budget, including proposal development, work breakdown structure development and implementation, progress assessment, risk assessment/mitigation, change management, and schedule management.
  • Coordinate and/or perform quality checks and reviews for all project deliverables per the HDR Quality Management Systems (QMS) requirements, processes, and procedures to deliver a world class quality product to the client. Perform quality checks and/or reviews of projects from other teams on an as needed basis.
  • Work independently and may direct, mentor, train, and/or supervise one or more Project Engineers, EITs, or CADD/Designers.
  • Ability to lead multiple projects concurrently, utilizing teams in different locations.
  • Work with senior engineers and technical leaders to identify and develop specific technical expertise and will attend training and seminars focused on further development and understanding of complex concepts related to their discipline.
  • May also assist with developing technical papers and/or presentations that showcase HDR’s technical capabilities at industry conferences or other events.
  • Participate in project reviews as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree
  • PMP certification
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering
  • 7 years related experience
