Job summary

Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory seeks an early‑career Subsea Robotics Engineer to join the Modeling and Control team in the Maritime Robotics Group (KMM). The role focuses on software for autonomous underwater systems, with hands‑on work from simulation to field testing.

You will develop robotics software in C++/Python on Linux, integrate sensors and actuators, and collaborate across disciplines to deliver robust, deployable robotic capabilities for challenging environments.

Qualifications

  • PhD in Robotics, Mechanical, Electrical, Ocean, Aerospace Engineering, CS or related field.
  • Experience developing robotic software using ROS 2.
  • Experience developing software on Linux.
  • Proficiency in Python and C++.

Responsibilities

  • Develop robotics software for AUVs/ROVs and subsea systems using ROS 2.
  • Design, implement, and maintain modular software in C++ and Python on Linux.
  • Develop and integrate dynamics, controls, guidance, navigation and autonomy algorithms.
  • Build high-fidelity simulation environments and modeling tools.
  • Integrate sensors, actuators, and vehicle subsystems.
  • Evaluate vehicle performance through simulation, lab testing, and field experiments.
  • Support integration and testing in lab, pool, and at-sea environments.
  • Collaborate across multidisciplinary teams to transition software to operational systems.
