The Student Writer supports the Smith College of Engineering & Technology’s marketing and communications efforts by writing and editing content for college audiences. This position will primarily assist with articles, interviews, copy editing, and other written communications while gaining professional writing and communications experience.
Responsibilities include:
- Research, interview, and write feature stories, news articles, and other content highlighting SCET students, faculty, programs, events, initiatives, and accomplishments.
- Edit and proofread articles, web content, emails, promotional materials, and other communications to ensure accuracy, clarity, consistency, and adherence to established style guidelines.
- Develop and revise content for marketing materials, websites, social media, newsletters, and other internal and external communication channels.
- Conduct interviews, perform research, verify information, and gather content to support communication and marketing initiatives.
- Collaborate with faculty, staff, students, and marketing team members to identify and develop compelling stories and content opportunities.
- Provide general communications support, including fact-checking, content review, project coordination, and other related duties as assigned.
- Current UVU student pursuing a degree in English, Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing, or a related field.
- Strong writing and editing experience through coursework, student media, internships, employment, or other projects.
- Experience conducting interviews or writing feature/news-style articles.
- Familiarity with AP style preferred.
- Writing samples or portfolio demonstrating strong written communication skills preferred.
- Familiarity with professional writing, editing, grammar, and AP style.
- Understanding of writing for different audiences and communication channels.
- Familiarity with interviewing and research practices.
- Strong writing, editing, proofreading, and verbal communication.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Experience conducting interviews and research.
- Effective organization and time management.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office or similar writing and collaboration tools.
