Job summary

Barber Preparatory Academy in Highland Park, MI is seeking a dedicated Student Tutor for the upcoming school year. The tutor will provide targeted academic support through individual and small-group instruction, reinforce classroom learning, and help students build confidence and reach their potential.

Ideal candidates have a high school diploma and meet Michigan Title I paraprofessional requirements. Prior tutoring or teaching experience and strong reading, writing, and math skills are

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Must meet Michigan Title I paraprofessional requirements by meeting at least one of: 60 semester hours; an associate degree or higher; or successful completion of a Michigan-approved paraprofessional assessment.
• Previous tutoring, mentoring, teaching, or working with school-age children preferred.
• Strong reading, writing, mathematics, and communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively with students individually and in small groups.
• Patient, encouraging, and able to build positive relationships with students.
• Ability to pass federal and state background checks.
• Experience working with urban students preferred.

Responsibilities

• Provide individualized and small-group tutoring to students based on identified academic needs.
• Reinforce skills and concepts introduced through classroom instruction.
• Support reading, literacy, writing, and mathematics.
• Adapt tutoring activities to student needs, learning styles, and skill levels.
• Identify students who would benefit from additional academic support with school leadership.
• Monitor understanding and progress and maintain records of services.
• Communicate progress to teachers and appropriate staff.
• Create a welcoming, supportive learning environment; maintain confidentiality.
