Job Summary

The Student Technology Operations Technician supports the day-to-day and event-day technology needs of Rice-Eccles Stadium and the Jon M. Huntsman Center. Working alongside the Tech Services team, this position provides hands-on assistance with venue technology, including audiovisual systems, networking and Wi-Fi, LED displays, ticketing technology, radios, computers, control systems, and other event-related equipment.

This position is designed to provide practical experience in a fast-paced, large-venue technology environment. The student will assist with equipment setup, testing, troubleshooting, maintenance, inventory, documentation, and event-day technical support while gaining exposure to the systems and infrastructure used to operate major collegiate athletics, entertainment, and special events.

No one is expected to know every system on day one. We are looking for someone who is dependable, curious, comfortable with technology, willing to learn, and ready to jump in wherever the Tech Services team needs support.

Responsibilities

• Assist Tech Services staff with the setup, operation, testing, troubleshooting, and maintenance of technology systems throughout Rice-Eccles Stadium and the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
• Provide event-day technology support for athletic events, concerts, and other special events, including pre-event system checks, equipment deployment, troubleshooting, and post-event support.
• Assist with audiovisual systems, displays and LED technology, computers, networking and Wi-Fi equipment, radios, ticketing technology, control systems, and other venue technology.
• Perform routine equipment inspections and preventative maintenance to help identify and resolve issues before they impact an event.
• Assist with the installation, configuration, cabling, and deployment of new technology and equipment.
• Support basic network and connectivity troubleshooting, including wired and wireless devices and venue technology endpoints.
• Assist with inventory management, equipment organization, labeling, documentation, and maintaining clean and organized technology workspaces.
• Help create and maintain technical documentation, equipment records, diagrams, procedures, and event-day checklists.
• Work with Tech Services staff, University departments, vendors, and event personnel to help resolve technical issues and support venue operations.
• Learn and develop skills across multiple areas of venue technology, including emerging systems and technologies used within Tech Services.
• Maintain appropriate security and confidentiality when working with technology systems, network infrastructure, access-controlled spaces, and University equipment.
• Communicate technical issues clearly and promptly and elevate problems when additional assistance is needed.
• Perform other technology and event-support duties as assigned based on the operational needs of Tech Services.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate's degree in a computer related field or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience). Two years of related experience preferred. Demonstrated computer skills, human relations and effective communication skills are required.

Preferences

• Current University of Utah student pursuing a degree or demonstrating an interest in Information Technology, Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, Audio/Visual Technology, Broadcast Technology, or a related field.
• General interest in technology, troubleshooting, and learning how large-scale venue technology systems operate.
• Basic knowledge of computers, networking, audiovisual equipment, or other technology systems is preferred but not required.
• Comfortable working hands-on with technology, including computers, cabling, displays, networking equipment, and other electronic systems.
• Strong problem-solving skills and a willingness to learn unfamiliar systems and technologies.
• Dependable, self-motivated, and able to work independently as well as part of a team.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work professionally with staff, vendors, event personnel, and guests.
• Ability to remain calm and work effectively in fast-paced, high-pressure event environments.
• Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
• Availability for athletic events, concerts, and other special events, including evenings and weekends, is strongly preferred.
• Previous experience with IT support, networking, AV, broadcast, live events, or venue operations is a plus but is not required. Training and hands-on experience will be provided.

Work Schedule Summary: This position offers a flexible schedule built around the student's academic commitments, with weekday hours arranged based on class schedules and availability. Event-day availability, including evenings and weekends, is strongly expected and is an important part of the position. We understand that academics come first, and when school obligations create a conflict, we will work with the student to accommodate those needs with advance communication.
