Salary/Position Classification
  • Salary: $42,250 - $44,463+ for a 10-month staff appointment (June 16 - August 15 off)
  • Hours: 40 hours per week during the 10-month period
  • Contract Period: August 16 - June 15 each year

Purpose of Position

The mission of the College of Nursing & Professional Disciplines (CNPD) is to provide excellent and collaborative education, scholarship and service to advance human well-being for all, with an emphasis on rural and underserved populations.

The CNPD consists of the departments of Nursing, Nutrition & Dietetics, and Social Work as well as the Children & Family Services Training Center. The department of Nursing recently received a grant (Gero-STARR) that aims to increase the nursing workforce in rural and underserved areas to address the nursing shortage.

We are seeking a Student Support Services Mentor whose primary responsibility is to provide support services to undergraduate nursing students. This will be accomplished through monitoring, tracking and mentoring, which will include meeting with GERO-STARR mentees a minimum of twice per week.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Mentor Nursing Students
    • Develop and maintain peer mentor program, including evaluation of program
    • Provide an orientation and overview to students each semester
    • Conduct Needs Assessments each semester for each mentee and develop strategies to assist students with individualized plans for success
    • Conduct initial mentor sessions individually with students in the first four weeks of the semester to review the mentoring expectations and discuss their needs, and meet with Gero-STARR students individually each month during academic year.
    • Develop rapport and trusting relationship with students essential to the mentor role
    • Review academic readiness and possible barriers, determine support services needed and assist with those services
    • Provide academic support, assist with financial aid applications and all documentation needed to facilitate academic readiness and success
    • Set up group or individual study sessions and provide group mentoring for common challenges (i.e., stress management, study skills, time management, etc)
    • Assist with NCLEX preparation for Gero-STARR students, as needed
    • Support student writing activities (i.e., cover letters, CVs, articles, presentations) with possible referral to Writing Mentor/Services
    • Assess student needs related to tutoring and refer to Gero-STARR tutor
  • Student Recruitment, Engagement and Data Utilization
    • Assist in recruitment & retention activities related to the program
    • Participate and assist with pre-matriculation programs in coordination with Nursing's Office of Student Services
    • Serve as program representative at conferences/events for students exploring health careers and at recruitment meetings across CNPD
    • Collaborate with programs across CNPD to support admissions and retention activities
    • Create, support and facilitate engagement opportunities for current students and Gero-STARR alumni
    • Perform data analysis to measure student and program outcomes to support program improvement
    • Co-develop student tracking database to identify and track current and past Gero-STARR students
    • Co-develop program evaluation plan
    • Maintain data to assist with strategic decision making through data analysis and assist with reporting requirements

Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing
  • Must be eligible for licensure as a registered nurse in North Dakota or have a current unencumbered ND RN license
  • One year experience as an RN
  • Recent clinical practice in acute or long-term care
  • Basic software experience with Microsoft Office products
  • Prior usage of nursing lab equipment
  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

  • Master of Science in Nursing, Public Health or Psychology
  • 2+ years of BSN-prepared experience as an RN in an acute care or long-term care setting
