Job summary

Under the supervision of the Library Director, the Student Success Librarian assists JC students with instruction and tutorials tailored to their information needs, both in person and virtually, and supports library cataloging and technical services.

This part-time role (10-15 hours per week) emphasizes leading instruction sessions, providing research help, developing interactive tutorials and LibGuides content, and collaborating with faculty to integrate library resources into courses.

Qualifications

  • MLS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited program is required.
  • At least 1 year of professional library experience preferred in an academic setting.
  • Ability to present information literacy concepts clearly to classes.
  • Experience with library cataloging and research support.

Responsibilities

  • Lead library instruction sessions for introductory courses and others as requested.
  • Provide one-on-one research assistance in-person and online, including chat reference.
  • Develop interactive tutorials, videos, Canvas modules, and LibGuides aligned with curricula.
  • Back-up cataloging assistance for library items as needed.
  • Collaborate with faculty to integrate library services into syllabi and online courses.
  • Troubleshoot online resources (Springshare suite, EBSCO Discovery Service, etc.).
  • Develop projects to engage students and faculty with library resources.
  • Assist with collection development and CEP research requests.
  • Support other library staff and uphold college values and mission.

Job description

Under the supervision of the Library Director, the Student Success Librarian assists the library's efforts to provide instruction and tutorials that appeal to the individual information needs of JC students, both in person and virtually. The Student Success Librarian also assists with library cataloging and technical services.

This position is part-time for 10-15 hours per week.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Lead library instruction sessions to introductory college writing courses as well as other classes as requested by instructors.
  • Provide one-on-one research assistance both in-person and virtually, including the library's obligation to staff collaborative chat reference services weekly.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of interactive tutorials, videos, Canvas modules, online resource guides (LibGuides), and other digital learning resources that align with the college curriculum and support student needs.
  • Provide back-up cataloging assistance for library items, including books and other physical objects, as needed.
  • Collaborate with faculty across the curriculum on incorporating library services and tools into their syllabi and into their online courses.
  • Learn, maintain, and troubleshoot online library resources, such as Springshare suite, online library catalog, EBSCO Discovery Service, and other databases.
  • Develop projects & initiatives to engage both students & faculty with library resources and services.
  • Assist with collection development.
  • Help fulfill research requests from CEP (Corrections Education Program) students as needed.
  • Provide support to other library staff as needed.
  • Responsible for understanding, supporting and actively demonstrating the College's beliefs, values, mission and vision and being in agreement to be evaluated by same.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Assist with the supervision of library student workers as needed.

CONTACTS AND PURPOSE OF CONTACTS

Internal: Coordinate and communicate within the College community to facilitate student enrollment. Frequent contact with faculty and other departments for the purposes of information sharing.

External: Make contact, as needed, with schools, businesses and other agencies, in addition to current and prospective students, to provide information about Jackson College.

Minimum/Required Education

Master's degree in Library Science (MLS, MS, MSLS, etc.) from an American Library Association-accredited institution.

Minimum/Required Abilities and Experience
  • At least one year of professional library experience, preferably in an academic library setting.
  • Ability to present information literacy concepts to classes using engaging and innovative techniques.
  • Skilled at providing one-on-one research support to students, both in-person and online - especially those who are new to academic research.
  • Experience with library cataloging in a public or academic library.
  • Adept at using Microsoft Office/Google Workspace programs and willing to learn about new technologies.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills.
