Job description

Student Services and Enrollment Coordinator

The Institute of Buddhist Studies invites applications for a full-time administrative appointment to support the Institute’s academic program. Candidates should have relevant experience in college or university admissions, student services, or related areas. Experience in graduate programs is preferred, and knowledge of Buddhist studies, religious studies, or the humanities generally is ideal. The position requires attention to detail, strong organizational and time-management skills, and the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with both staff and faculty. Candidates will possess the ability to analyze problems and apply good judgment in proposing or implementing solutions; understand and be committed to diversity and the mission of the Institute; have the ability to prioritize and work with minimal supervision; understand and abide by the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and the confidentiality of records.

As Student Services and Enrollment Coordinator, the successful candidate will be responsible for managing the full “lifecycle” of students, from initial inquiry through graduation. Key responsibilities will include: student recruitment (supporting ongoing marketing campaigns, hosting open house events); student onboarding and orientation; and student support services. This role serves as the primary point of contact for students within the admissions, enrollment, and registration processes with an emphasis on ensuring student issues are resolved thoroughly and with a student-focused approach.

As Student Services and Enrollment Coordinator, duties include responsibility for managing the Institute’s student information system (Populi), ensuring that student records are consistently updated and data appropriately shared with the Institute’s Director of Institutional Research.

Remote work options may be available; however, the candidate will be required to be in Berkeley periodically to support physical record management and to attend specific annual events (orientation, graduation). This is a full-time, hourly position reporting to the Dean. All full-time IBS employees are eligible for health insurance, participation in the Institute’s 401(k) plan, paid holidays, and other benefits.

The anticipated annual salary for this position is $66,250 commensurate with qualifications and experience.

About the Institute of Buddhist Studies: founded by Nisei Japanese American Buddhists in 1949 and incorporated as the Institute of Buddhists Studies in 1966, IBS is a Buddhist seminary and graduate school that prepares students for careers in Buddhist ministry, chaplaincy, and further academic study at the doctoral level. With a foundation in the Japanese Buddhist tradition, IBS’s programs cover the breadth of the Buddhist tradition across Asia and the modern world. Accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, and a member school of the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, CA, IBS is grounded in the critical academic study of Buddhism. The Institute is thus located at the intersection of the scholarly and practitioner communities with a commitment to racial, gender, academic, and Buddhist diversity.
