Purpose:

Under the general direction of a respiratory therapist and in accordance with the PA Practice Act or NY State guidelines, the student respiratory care assistant will perform various functions. These include ordering, inventorying, and distributing equipment, including medical gases. The role involves assisting clinical staff with tasks as directed and maintaining respiratory equipment, including assembly, transport, disinfection, calibration, and troubleshooting. The assistant is responsible for maintaining equipment levels across respiratory work areas and supporting respiratory therapists and staff with assigned tasks.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide excellent service by actively listening to and responding to the needs of patients, families, physicians, staff, and others.
  • Maintain supplies of transport oxygen and oxygen cylinders in inpatient units, emergency departments, and clinics.
  • Perform routine assembly, maintenance, and cleaning of respiratory care equipment; disinfect equipment prior to calibration and assembly; ensure adequate equipment levels daily.
  • Transport dirty equipment using infection control techniques.
  • Handle and use cleaning and disinfecting solutions and equipment appropriately.
  • Use personal protective equipment correctly.
  • Report equipment malfunctions to respiratory leadership.
  • Inspect equipment for correct assembly, ensure all parts are functional, and perform preventative maintenance as per protocols.
  • Check equipment functionality and calibrate according to department or manufacturer specifications.
  • Transport equipment between units and procedure areas as directed.
  • Assist biomedical technicians with tracking respiratory care equipment.
  • Identify, catalog, and track respiratory care equipment.
  • Assist with bronchoscope procedures, including setup, processing, and post-procedure tasks.
  • Support non-emergent intubations and extubations.
  • Assist with downloading and documenting sleep studies.
  • Perform smoking cessation counseling as per department policy.
  • Deliver home care supplies such as oxygen tanks and compressors.
  • Maintain proficiency in Microsoft Office, electronic health records, ePro ordering system, and printing systems.
