Purpose:

Under the general direction of a respiratory therapist and in accordance with the PA Practice Act or NY State guidelines, the student respiratory care assistant will perform various functions including ordering, inventorying, and distributing equipment such as medical gases. They will assist clinical staff with tasks as directed and are responsible for assembling, transporting, disinfecting, calibrating, and troubleshooting respiratory equipment. They also maintain equipment levels across respiratory work areas and support respiratory therapists and staff with various duties.

Responsibilities:

• Provide excellent service by actively listening to and responding to patients, their families, physicians, staff, and others.
• Maintain supplies of transport oxygen and oxygen cylinders across inpatient units, emergency department, and clinics.
• Perform routine assembly, maintenance, and cleaning of respiratory care equipment, ensuring proper disinfection and calibration.
• Transport and handle equipment using appropriate infection control techniques.
• Use personal protective equipment correctly.
• Report equipment malfunctions to respiratory leadership.
• Inspect equipment for proper assembly and functionality, performing preventative maintenance as per protocols.
• Ensure equipment is functioning correctly and calibrate as per specifications.
• Transport equipment between inpatient units and procedure areas as directed.
• Assist biomedical technicians with tracking respiratory care equipment.
• Catalog and track all respiratory care equipment accurately.
• Support bronchoscope procedures by setup and processing according to manufacturer recommendations.
• Assist with setting up for non-emergent intubations and extubations.
• Help with downloading and documenting sleep studies.
• Perform smoking cessation counseling as per department policy.
• Deliver home care supplies such as oxygen tanks and compressors.
• Maintain proficiency with Microsoft Office, electronic health records, and ordering systems.
