Job description

About ECS

The mission of the Environmental Charter Schools (ECS) is to reimagine public education in low-income communities of color to prepare conscious, critical thinkers who are equipped to graduate from college and create a more equitable and sustainable world. Environmental Charter Schools (ECS) is a non-profit charter management organization with four free public schools in South Los Angeles.

Since its inception in 2001, ECS has provided a unique learning experience that utilizes project-based, interdisciplinary curricula to inspire our students to find authentic meaning in their studies. ECS proudly serves over 1,500 students at two middle schools (Gardena and Inglewood) and at two high schools (Lawndale and Gardena) and has been recognized for its ability to close achievement gaps for low-income Black/African American and Latino students. ECHS Lawndale ranks in the top 2% of public high schools in U.S. News & World Report, 100% of students graduate high school with the coursework necessary for admission to a four-year college or university, and 97% of students are admitted into a four-year college. Most of our students will be the first in their family to graduate from college.

The Opportunity

Environmental Charter Schools is seeking a dynamic, people-centered Student Recruitment Assistant to serve as a bridge between ECS and the communities we recruit from and serve. This is a year-round role focused on student recruitment, family engagement, and community outreach, with the heaviest activity during enrollment season. It's a strong fit for someone who thrives in a fast-paced, relationship-driven environment and enjoys connecting with community members.

The Student Recruitment Assistant is the face of ECS for prospective students, families, and community partners, working closely with site leaders, office managers, and counselors to bring new families to our schools. Success in this role looks like enthusiasm, authenticity, and a real connection to what makes an ECS education different. ECS alumni are strongly encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities:
Student & Family Recruitment:
  • Support and staff enrollment events including open houses, school tours, information sessions, and community fairs.
  • Engage prospective students and families in person, by phone, and digitally to communicate the value and mission of ECS.
  • Conduct community outreach activities including canvassing, tabling, and neighborhood events.
  • Develop and execute social media campaigns to drive awareness and interest in ECS enrollment.
  • Communicate regularly with prospective families to nurture leads and support the application and enrollment process.
  • Coordinate with site-based teams, including office managers, counselors, and school leaders, to plan and execute high-quality recruitment activities.
  • Maintain accurate records of outreach contacts, event attendance, and lead follow-up in tracking systems.
  • Represent ECS with warmth, professionalism, and deep knowledge of the school’s programs and culture.
Year-Round Responsibilities:
  • Maintain outreach calendars and coordinate scheduling across teams.
  • Contribute to the development of recruitment materials, talking points, and scripts for tours and outreach.
  • Participate in ECS network-wide events and activities as needed.
  • Model a personal code of ethics aligned with ECS mission and values.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • ECS alumnus/a strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated passion for ECS’s mission and the communities we serve.
  • Ability to share compelling stories about the ECS student, family, staff, and alumni experience in a way that is authentic, accurate, and mission-aligned.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, comfortable speaking publicly and engaging diverse audiences.
  • Experience with or enthusiasm for social media content creation and digital outreach.
  • Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple priorities and track details across systems.
  • Proficiency in Google Suite; familiarity with CRM or enrollment tracking systems a plus.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends during peak recruitment seasons.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment when handling student, family, staff, candidate, and alumni information.
  • Valid CA driver’s license and ability to travel to all ECS sites and community locations.
  • Bilingual Spanish (spoken and written) preferred.
  • Prior experience in community outreach, customer service, event coordination, or a related field a plus.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and administrators
  • Commitment to the success of all students and the ECS mission, vision, and values
The Perks:
  • Small Learning Communities with smaller class sizes and lower student to counselor ratios.
  • Social and Environmental Justice Focus.
