Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of Social Work is seeking two Student Recruiters to support the BSW and MSW programs. You will partner with advisors, the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs, and faculty to guide applicants from inquiry to advisor assignment.

Virginia Commonwealth University's (VCU) School of Social Work hasan exciting opportunity for two Student Recruiters!

Primary Purpose

The Student Recruiter at Virginia Commonwealth University’s (VCU)School of Social Work (SSW) will work closely with the SeniorStudent Recruitment Specialist, advisors for the Bachelor of SocialWork(BSW) and/or Master of Social Work (MSW) programs, theAssistant Dean of Student Affairs, program directors, faculty, andstaff to ensure a seamless experience from the point of inquirythrough advisor assignment.

General Responsibilities

Student Recruiters providestudent recruitment services for the BSW and/or MSW programs. Theyserve as liaisons to department or unit managers in order toeffectively develop and implement recruitment strategies consistentwith the university's overall recruitment strategy. Their typicalduties include leading the coordination of undergraduate andgraduate recruitment initiatives; conducting information sessions,interviews, and counseling sessions with prospective students andtheir parents; providing guidance to prospective applicants onprogram requirements and required documents, admission, anduniversity procedures; utilizing pre-enrollment databases foradmission status verification and outreach; traveling torecruitment events at college fairs, career fairs, social workconferences, and community colleges. They work under limitedsupervision, resolving moderately complex issues independently andreferring more complex issues to the Senior Recruitment Specialistand/or Assistant Dean of Student Affairs. Their decisions andquality of services have a measurable impact on university andSchool of Social Work recruitment goals. This is an enterprise-wideposition.

Key Responsibilities
  • Represent VCU at various student recruitment events andactivities for the assigned area or student base includingattending college fairs, career fairs, visits to high schools andcommunity colleges.
  • Serve as a University liaison and provide exemplary customerservice and information about the university to prospectiveundergraduate students, their parents, guidance counselors, andother constituencies.
  • Plan, organize, and conduct information sessions, interviews,and counseling sessions with prospective undergraduate students andtheir parents to provide information about the university,admissions processes, and university policies and procedures.
  • Evaluate data and applicant credentials for admission andcounsel prospective students on their admissibility and ability tobe successful once at VCU.
  • Coordinate and implement recruitment strategies to attract newincoming MSW students, BSW freshmen and transfer students and workclosely with other University offices.
  • Respond to emails, participate in chat sessions, and make phonecalls to prospective students to encourage campus visits andapplications for admission
  • Maintain appropriate follow up communication with thesestudents and their families regarding the status of theirapplications for admission and financial aid.
  • Participate in other Admissions recruitment activitiesincluding with campus partners and out of state.
  • Maintain relationships with secondary school counselors,community college counselors, and community-based organizationleaders.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in social work, education, professionalcounseling, psychology or a related field; or an equivalentcombination of education, training, and experience directly relatedto the responsibilities of the position.
  • 1-3 years of higher education or relevant experience.
  • Excellent written, interpersonal, and oral communication skillsand presentation skills.
  • Ability to support and contribute to a dynamic and healthy teamenvironment.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize multiple tasks concurrentlyand independently.
  • Ability to maintain confidential, accurate records anddatabases.
  • Excellent computer skills and experience with all MicrosoftOffice and Google Suite products, as well as various communicationtechnologies including Google Apps, Zoom, and social media.
  • Ability to provide clear direction and establish efficientpriorities.
  • Comfort with and the ability to travel for extendedperiods.
  • Ability to work weekend or evening recruitment events asscheduled by the School and university.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering an environmentof respect, professionalism and civility with a population offaculty, staff, and students from various backgrounds andexperiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member atVCU.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in social work, education, professionalcounseling, psychology, or related human services field.
  • Prior experience in higher education or related fields.
  • Prior experience working with college students or relateddemographics.
  • An interest in working in a complex and fast-movingorganization.
