Summary

This transition position is offered to unlicensed graduates of an RN academic nursing program accredited through the NLNAC or CCNE. Apprentice Nurse Program (ANP) functions in a supportive role to a registered nurse and collaborates with the healthcare team to manage patient care. It provides students with experience in caring for a diverse patient population and developing communication and organizational skills. Students report to the Manager of the Nurse Residency Program and/or Nursing Unit Manager or designee. Clinical responsibilities are coordinated by the clinical supervisor. ANPs perform direct patient care, obtain vital signs, collect specimens, document intake/output, communicate effectively, promote patient safety, and work as part of the healthcare team. Adherence to Baystate Health policies, laws, and regulations is mandatory.

Requirements

1. Provides age-appropriate care: Demonstrates knowledge of developmental stages and applies theories when caring for patients.
2. Assists with elimination: Helps patients with waste elimination, accurately labels and sends specimens, measures and records height, weight, and vital signs.
3. Communicates with staff: Reports dangerous or life-threatening situations, provides high-quality care information, interacts respectfully with patients and families, recognizes cultural needs.
4. Knowledge of emergency procedures: Initiates emergency protocols and resources.
5. Assists with ancillary services: Supports delivery of ancillary services as directed.
6. Supports clerical activities: Prepares charts, ensures proper scheduling, verifies insurance, records test results timely.
7. Vital signs and dressing changes: Takes vitals, applies dressings, participates in patient procedures under RN supervision.
8. Participates in courses: Engages in Phlebotomy and Dysrhythmia courses.
