Job summary

Luther Seminary is seeking a Student Library Assistant (Circulation) to support library staff and keep stacks organized. This student-only role handles circulation desk tasks, shelving, and basic front-desk duties in a welcoming, service-oriented environment.

Responsibilities include checking books in/out, guiding patrons, answering questions, assisting with evenings or weekends, and helping maintain a safe, hospitable space for students and staff alike.

Qualifications

• At least one year of customer service-type experience.
• Library work experience preferred but not required.
• Ability to communicate clearly and tactfully, in person, by phone or by email, with fellow staff and library patrons.
• Strong attention to detail.
• Basic skills and comfort level with computers, printers, and copiers.
• Must have a friendly, helpful attitude.
• Knowledge of ELCA helpful.
• Familiarity with other mainline Christian organizations also helpful.
• Must be able to push a full book cart and stand for prolonged periods of time.

Responsibilities

• Circulation Desk Duties: check books in and out, interpret library policies, answer patron questions, help find materials, refer complex questions to staff, re-shelve books, shelf reading, other tasks as assigned.
• Opening and closing duties for evenings, weekends, and other times as needed (retrieve items from book drop, unlock doors, put away stray books, ensure patrons are out at closing, lock doors, shut down computers, turn off lights).
• Helping to maintain a safe and hospitable environment (assisting patrons with wheelchair access, directing during weather emergencies).
