Job summary

The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) invites college engineering students to join the Bridge Division's Hydraulics team for hands-on design experience supporting drainage, peak flow calculations, and culvert sizing. Under supervision, interns will assist in roadway drainage projects, review FEMA floodplain maps, and participate in project meetings and field inspections.

This internship requires part-time to full-time availability during school breaks and a strong foundation in civil

Qualifications

  • Must be a three-fourths student in good standing majoring in an engineering-related field.
  • Second semester sophomore majoring in Civil Engineering with experience in CAD.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in roadway drainage design under supervision.
  • Delineate drainage basins and determine peak flows.
  • Size non-bridge culverts using HY-8 analysis.
  • Analyze stormwater treatment and sewer design.
  • Review FEMA floodplain maps for NDOT projects.
  • Attend and document project meetings and field inspections.
  • Complete hydrology and hydraulics training as it relates to roadway design.

The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) has an exciting opportunity for a college engineering student interested in joining the Bridge Division's Hydraulics team and furthering their design knowledge and experience!

Job Duties

Under close supervision of a Professional Engineer, the Intern will assist in the design of roadway construction projects related to delineating drainage basins, determine peak flows with the rational and NRCS methods, and sizing non‑bridge sized culverts using FHWA’s HY‑8 culvert analysis program.

Duties may also include:
  • Perform analysis of stormwater treatment and storm sewer design.
  • Review FEMA floodplain maps and prepare maps along NDOT projects in order to assist engineers with certifying project related to floodplain impacts.
  • Assist in the review of work of a broad scope, complexity, and diversity.
  • Participate in and document engineering decisions and keep project correspondence files accurate and up to date.
  • Prepare for and participate in project meetings when needed, as well as prepare for and participate in project field inspections.
  • Complete training aspects of hydrology and hydraulics topics as they pertain to roadway design.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements / Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications

Must be a three‑fourths student in good standing majoring in a discipline or field related to the work to be assigned.

Preferred Qualifications
  • A second semester sophomore majoring in Civil Engineering with experience in the use of Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD).
Other
  • Applicants must be at least a three fourths time student majoring in engineering or related field and be able to work at least 10 hours a week when classes are in session, 16 hours a week preferred.
  • Temporary full‑time employment may be available during scheduled school breaks.
  • Regular and reliable attendance is required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Basic knowledge of Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD).
