Job summary

Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) is seeking an Engineer in the Project Development Division to help scope and develop transportation projects from concept to construction.

You will conduct reviews, prepare technical reports, and coordinate with internal staff and federal agencies to ensure compliance with standards and regulations. The position offers collaboration, innovation, and opportunities for professional growth within a supportive team.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline and FE exam within one year.
  • Civil engineering degree with transportation focus.
  • Experience in design of highways, streets, culverts, and storm sewers.
  • Experience with highway construction plans, construction estimates, and surveying.
  • Knowledge of MicroStation, OpenRoads Designer, ProjectWise, and AASHTOware.
  • Degree from an ABET/CEAB or meet NCEES standards.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable attendance.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct engineering reviews and prepare technical reports for highway and bridge projects.
  • Review and analyze pavement condition and related roadway information; coordinate with other divisions and agencies.
  • Research databases, define project scope, and develop cost estimates per standards.
  • Develop alternatives for project scope and document preliminary survey requests.
  • Perform site visits to support scope development; manage multiple projects.
  • Maintain communications between NDOT divisions and districts; update project files.
  • Attend meetings and perform special projects as assigned.

Job Duties:
  • Conduct engineering reviews and prepare technical reports for highway and bridge construction projects that involve replacement or resurfacing of existing roadway pavement, shoulder widening, culvert extension, bridge improvement/replacement, and/or geometric correction.
  • Review and analyze pavement condition and other information about the existing roadway, including typical cross sections, structural information, right-of-way information, culvert data, and proximity of environmentally sensitive resources, request improvement recommendations from engineers in other divisions, coordinate with internal staff and other State and/or Federal agencies to ensure compliance with design standards and other applicable State and Federal regulations.
  • Research agency databases or consult with agency employees and analyze existing roadway information and identify needs or deficiencies; determine and recommend project scope definitions.
  • Develop detailed project cost estimates by calculating quantities in accordance with Standard Specifications for Highway Construction.
  • Develop and document alternatives for elements of project scope as needed to determine solutions for project scope.
  • Develop preliminary survey requests by estimating the project area.
  • Perform project site visits to facilitate development of the scope of work regarding roadway culverts (there will not be overnight travel).
  • Maintain communication between NDOT divisions and district offices concerning elements of project scope.
  • Update and organize computer files used in the project development phase of a design or construction/improvement projects.
  • Manage multiple projects that are at various stages of completion simultaneously.
  • Maintain and update project status and needs.
  • Participate in meetings as needed.
  • Complete special projects as assigned.
  • Provide assistance to the Project Scoping Engineer as assigned.
  • Assist the Project Scoping Engineer in the development, assignment, and management of contracted survey projects.
  • Assist Project Scoping Engineer and Project Studies and Survey Engineer as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements / Qualifications:
  • Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in an Engineering discipline. Must pass the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam (FE) within one year of employment.
  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering with transportation related focus.
  • Educational experience and knowledge in the design of highways, streets, culverts, and storm sewers.
  • Educational experience and knowledge in the preparation of highway construction plans, construction estimates, highway construction, highway inspection and highway surveying.
  • Educational experience or other experience in MicroStation, OpenRoads Designer, ProjectWise, and AASHTOware.
  • Degree must be from an EAC/ABET or CEAB(Canada)-accredited engineering program OR meet the NCEES Engineering Education Standard.
  • Valid driver's license or ability to provide independent authorized transportation is required.
  • Regular and reliable attendance is required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of: General engineering practices and standards (preference to Civil Engineering).
  • Skilled in: Mathematics and engineering problem solving; use of computers to communicate, record and analyze information related to work; written and oral communications; organization and record keeping.
  • Ability to: Consistently maintain a professional attitude during day-to-day operations; develop necessary professional relationships in order to be effective; manage multiple tasks and information effectively and accurately with attention to detail; occasionally work outdoors for project site visits.
