DISEASE CONTROL & EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS

The Student Intern Program is for students seeking to gain knowledge of, and valuable work experience in public sector / city government operations. Work hours are flexible to meet the needs of students and city departments. These are temporary positions.

Internships are limited to one academic year. Students are limited to working one internship (lasting no more than one academic year) per City Department.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
  • Conduct interviews for STEC, Salmonella, and other communicable disease infections immediately after case identification, including cases involved in a multistate cluster investigation.
  • Enter data into required surveillance systems (INEDSS and REDcap) and provide additional information for entry into NORS, SEDRIC, etc.
  • Support staff in coordinating case testing during enteric disease investigations.
  • Assist with follow-up investigations prompted by cluster detection or local outbreaks, including participation in CDC-led multistate outbreak investigations.
  • Complete training in interview techniques, data entry, and specimen collection.
  • Compile, tabulate, and analyze data using Microsoft Excel, SAS, or R, and gather information for studies and reports.
  • Create documents, spreadsheets, and manage databases with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Perform administrative tasks and other related duties to support program activities as needed.

Additional duties may be required for this position.

ADDRESS: 1340 S. Damen

DAYS: Monday - Friday

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Must be a student currently enrolled in an accredited college, university, or law school OR a student currently enrolled in an accredited business or data processing/ information technology school.

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS

This position requires applicants to complete an interview which will include a written exercise / skills assessment test as part of the interview. The interviewed candidate(s) possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position, based on the oral and written parts of the interview will be selected.

Desired Skills:
  • Currently accepted or enrolled in a degree-seeking graduate program (MPH, MS or PhD) in epidemiology, environmental health or related public health field
  • Previous experiencedevelopingand maintainingeffective interpersonal relations with co-workers, supervisors, and health care professionals.
  • Previous experience communicatingwith members of the public and health care professionals.
  • Previous experience workingcollaboratively as part of a team.
  • Enrolled in school with at least 6 credit hours (or quarter hour equivalency) during the internship, except during academic breaks, such as summer.
