Position Summary

Serving the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) as one of threeStudent and Faculty Support Specialists (SFSS), this role’s primaryresponsibilities include (a) coordinating College-level recruitment initiatives(including participation in large Admissions events and faculty engagementopportunities during daily visits), (b) providing oversight for the operationsof the Honors Program, Office of Undergraduate Research, and the HSS Advising Center(including hosting programs that support admission and current studentretention), (c) supporting shared inboxes and phone lines, (d) hiring,training, and supervising undergraduate student staff members and (e) coordinatingHSS and Honors undergraduate and advisor and faculty mentor assignments inBanner. The Recruitment and Operations Specialist will work collaborativelywith a variety of faculty members and staff within the College and across the university.

This positionrequires excellent interpersonal, written, and presentation skills, creativity,organization, and attention to detail. Incumbents in the position must balancemultiple facets among simultaneous responsibilities. A drive to create a welcoming, interactive, and engaging experience for participants is central tothe role, and the ability to provide additional verbal support in Spanish ispreferred.

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences includes thefollowing academic units: Africana Studies; Anthropology; Chicana/o and LatinxStudies; Communication Studies and Journalism; Criminology and CriminalJustice; Economics; English; Gender Studies; Geography, GIS, andSustainability; History; Leadership Studies; Philosophy; Political Science andInternational Affairs; Sociology; World Languages and Cultures; Honors Program;and Office of Undergraduate Research.

This positionwill collaborate with HSS faculty and staff, as well as campus partners tosupport students’ academic success and retention. Driven by our values ofholistic student support, HSS strives to provide opportunities forUNC students to develop skills that promote academic growth, increase campusknowledge, and persist to graduation.

After a three-monthtraining period, HSS staff members are typically permitted one day of remotework each week. Occasional night and weekend work will be required in alignmentwith recruitment events, programming, student staff training, and HSScelebrations.

45% CollegeRegistration Outreach and Recruitment/Admissions Support
  • Serve as the HSS admissions liaison and coordinate College-level participation for UNC’s campus-wide prospective student events (first-year and transfer), e.g., Destination UNC
  • Attend Admissions events while answering prospective student questions, introducing HSS programs, and facilitating connections with current faculty
  • Manage HSS daily visit logistics for faculty and prospective student meetings
  • Collaborate with HSS faculty and staff to administer prospective student mailings, i.e., postcards and email campaigns
  • Coordinate HSS giveaways and related budgets
  • Collaborate with the Dean’s Office to support New Student Orientation and the HSS College Welcome and related events
  • Assist with coordinationof new transfer student advising upon students’ confirmation of attendance
  • Utilize technology to coordinate reservations, purchases, and outreach including 25Live, Slate, Canva, online banking platforms, and the Microsoft Office Suite

  • Create and maintain academic advisor and faculty mentor assignments for all HSS and Honors undergraduates (Main Campus and Extended Campus) within Ellucian Banner
  • Utilize varioussoftware platforms to run reports and maintain accurate student records includingEllucian Banner, Insight, OnBase, EAB Navigate/Student SuccessCollaborative, and the Microsoft Office Suite (namely Microsoft Excel,Outlook, and Word)
  • Maintain up-to-dateknowledge of relevant college and university policies and procedures
  • Assist with the development and implementation of procedures to assess student needs and the impact/outcome of advising and retention services
  • Maintain student data security while adhering to FERPA and other relevant institutional, state, and federal policies and guidelines
35% HSSAdmissions and Retention Support
  • Create a welcoming, respectful, and supportive environment for all members of the UNC community while maintaining detailed knowledge of and serving as a point of contact for campus support services, including but not limited to Tutorial Services, Student Outreach and Support, the Student Counseling Center, the Disability Resource Center, Bear Central, Admissions, UNC’s cultural and resource centers, the Writing Center, Math Lab, and the Center for Career Readiness.
  • Serve as the primarymanager of the HSS shared inboxes (such as the HSS Advising and Honors) andphone lines.Answer a variety ofquestions and provide timely/appropriate referrals and campus connections. With the written permission of faculty, assist with appropriate course overrides.Submit and relay students’ academic program (major/minor/certificate) changes.
  • Create and host events and activities to supportstudents’ success, retention, and belonging.Conduct event assessments and evaluations for continued growth and alignment with student needs.
  • Maintain assigned websites, digital resources, and create current and prospective student communications, e.g., social media event promotions and resource fair flyers.
  • Hire, train, and directlysupervise student employees for assigned areas. Supervision will includeongoing training and development, evaluation, scheduling, and support withevolving job responsibilities and office procedures. The HSS Advising Center will ensure thatthe studentemployees are also committed to creating anequitable and inclusive space for all members of the UNC community.
  • Utilize various software platforms to coordinate operations and communication/referrals including 25Live, Qualtrics, Slate, Canva, EAB Navigate/Student Success Collaborative, online banking platforms, Emmersion Learning, Degree Works, and the Microsoft Office Suite (namely Bookings, Outlook, and Word)

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in communication studies, recreation, tourism,and hospitality, public relations, marketing, business, theatre/performance, education,graphic design, or related field within the humanities and social sciences

Three years of equivalent and related work experience

Preferred Qualifications

Ideally, applicants will have related higher education work experience; excellent written and interpersonal communication skills; presentation skills, strong attention to detail; proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite applications, willingness to learn a variety of software platforms; a strong work ethic; experience working with students from historically marginalized identities, and a demonstrated ability to work and collaborate well with students, faculty, parents, and staff in both English and Spanish.A commitment to fostering a respectful, welcoming, and supportive environment for students, faculty, staff, and community members from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences is central to the position.
